Baku Live: Day 2 Summary

The day in short

So another day in Baku is over, and as you read this we’re leaving the press centre for a night in Euro-Club. Here is a summary:

Israel:

We’ve started with Israel now. They’ve got a punk-purple background with lots of clocks bouncing up and down on the backwall. The stage set up has the main band in the centre as one would expect,  but the backing singers situation over on one of the catwalks- and they then move further back towards the centre. They have a pyro beginning, and fire towards the end. Some camera shots need work, but it looks good on screen.

San Marino:

San Marino onstage now – Valentina is joined by several backing singers / dancers / social network friends. One has a guitar, one has pom poms as Valentina will be dressed as a cheerleader (as we saw in the outfit check before she began her rehearsal) and will be using her infamous laptop during the act as well.  Her vocals aren’t bad at all, and the choreography looks clean. From inside the arena San Marino is a hot mess!! Valentina is joined by three female and two male backing dancers/singers and a sparkly Macbook (amaaaazing!). The screen backdrop is very bright, very colourful and in your face with lots of ‘oh ohs’ popping up in speech bubbles around faces. Vocally, she sounds very good and I think it would be brilliant if this got through! Possible?

Cyprus:

Cyprus now – Ivi is standing on a raised platform surrounded by four backing dancers.  Because this is just a vocal run-through, we’re not seeing any dance moves at the moment.  Ivi has notoriously been mentioned for not having the strongest vocals, but her vocals are overall okay. The first show rehearsal of Cyprus has just finished. Interestingly, Ivi’s vocals are quite the same as they were in the sound check despite the dancing. The performance is quite simple in terms of the dancing with it all centred around a sort of small brick wall. One thing that might possibly need changing is the stage lighting because it all seems quite dark at the moment. Possibly a qualifier, a lot better than some would have expected however.

Denmark:

Denmark is up for a sound check now, pretty much the same stage performance as we seen in the Danish NF. Very well performed as expected and surely a qualifier. So the dress rehearsal is pretty much the same as the sound check. Backing screens are of a sort of outdoors landscape…it’s performed by Soluna and her band very confidently and looks good on stage! As Emma says, it kind of seems like a group of friends jamming in a garage…nice!

Russia:
Russia are on stage now doing their sound check, looks like a lot more people are in the arena than usual for this one….The grannies and their oven are on stage for their sound check…super cute! On stage with the grannies is a choreographer who is moving them around for camera angles etc. but it seems like the Babushki don’t care so much, they’re here for fun! So they all start out in front of the oven holding hands and hugging (so sweet) and then move forward for the chorus where the screen bursts into life with a disco ball behind it and green, blue and red strobes. After the breakdown, everybody’s favourite Babushki (the small one) goes to the oven and brings out a tray which I guess will have bread or cakes on it and brings it towards the camera. That was quite possibly the cutest performance ever at Eurovision.
Hungary:
So we have two backing singers (one male, one female) and the lead singer is using the catwalk on the stage for most of the performance which will look good on screen with the audience surrounding him. Vocals have been a concern for a lot of people for this entry but it actually didn’t seem to be that bad, a little flat in parts but mostly well sung. We have quite a dark stage setting with black and red lighting.
Austria:
So we have Trackshittaz on stage with three female dancers and their poles…this is possibly the filthiest, raunchiest performance ever at Eurovision. Seemed quite good vocally, no problems there but we guess they’re  keeping something as a surprise for the real performance.
Moldova:
Moldova are setting up now, some very bizarre looking outfits being shown off…So we have the first sound check of Moldova now but the screens in the press centre seem to have lost picture…Sounds quite good though, a few adlibs from Pasha along the way but maybe the female vocals are a little whiny…I’m quite disappointed that I can’t see this actually because I’m hoping it’s going to be a craaaaazy show!
Ireland:
Jedward are on. They’re both in blue shiny outfits, and start on a platform. The backing singers stand either side of them but a little further back. Jedward come off the platform for the chorus, and then on the second chorus the platform becomes a water feature. For the bridge, the twins stand on the platform with the backing singers around them, and then the water starts again. A good rehearsal for Jedward, who look in a very strong position from this draw in the semifinal.
