Junior Eurovision is a contentious point for many Eurovision fans. Some hate it, some love it and some could not be more indifferent about it if they tried. For me, I am a fan. Something I have always wondered is that with all this wealth of youth talent floating around Europe, no singer has competed in both contests as main singer. In this summer series I shall discuss the kids who have graced the Junior stage who I think deserve a shot at the real deal.
Molly Sandén – Sweden [19 years old, eligible since 2009]
Many seasoned Eurovision fans who swear by Melodifestivalen by abhor Junior Eurovision may be surprised that two time MF participant and ex-girlfriend of Eric Saade was actually discovered through the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, but for those who did know this, Molly will be perhaps the most obvious addition to this list.
Molly wowed the audience sufficiently enough to gain third place in 2006 with her big ballad vocals and was tipped by Swedish media at the time to be the next Carola. While she has not quite braved Carola’s gale-force winds she has managed to carve quite a respectable singing career for herself in Sweden and shown that her voice has only gotten stronger in the 6 years that have passed.
As mentioned above Molly has already shown her desire to enter Eurovision by partaking in Sweden’s notoriously competitive national final Melodifestivalen twice, making it into the final both times. Perhaps after two years of high energy up-tempo songs, Sweden will consider its junior balladeer for 2013? Or who knows, now that her two sisters Frida and Mimmi (who represented Sweden at jESC 2007 and 2009 resectively) are old enough maybe we’ll see a Sisters Sandén supergroup!?
