Turkey: TRT considering withdrawal

Turkey considers its future in the contest

Several Turkish media outlets are today reporting that the Turkish broadcaster TRT could be ready to pull out of the Eurovision Song Contest after the president deemed the contest “too predictable”.

The general director of the broadcaster, İbrahim Şahin announced his views of the current state of the contest to local Turkish media expressing that the winner is already decided months before the event takes place and urged that the current voting system be discussed.

He also dropped the bombshell that TRT had considered not participating in this year’s contest but felt it wouldn’t have been right withdrawing in the year that neighbour Azerbaijan hosted the event.

It was also revealed that Turkey’s biggest export, Tarkan had once again been contacted earlier this year to represent the country but refused the offer insisting that he would participate for sure if a victory was a certainty, Anything other then first place would be seen as downfall in his career.

Turkey have generally been very successful in the Eurovision Song Contest, only failing to qualify once since semi finals were introduced in 2004. Can Bonomo, who represented the country this year with “Love Me Back” finished 7th overall with 112 points.

With the national broadcaster in doubt of a future at the contest, the question is – Will Turkey be present in Malmo? – Stick with escXtra for the latest news.
