Tonight, it’s time to find the 23rd entry of the Eurovision Song Contest 2015. Germany will choose which act will represent them during the Eurovision final on 23rd May. Eight acts will take part, each with two songs. Possibly. Tonight’s procedure is a little complicated…

  • All eight acts will perform one song first.
  • After that, the top four artists will be chosen. These four go through to round two.
  • In the second round, the remaining four artists will perform their second song.
  • When that’s done, the top two songs will be chosen. That means that that is the song chosen for the superfinalist.
  • In the superfinal, we already know which two songs may represent Germany in Eurovision. No new songs will be performed.

Tonight’s acts, with the possible second song noted as second:

  1. Mrs. Greenbird – Shine Shine Shine / Take My Hands
  2. Alexa Feser – Glück / Das Gold von Morgen
  3. Faun – Hörst Du Die Trommeln / Abschied
  4. Noize Generation – A Song For You / Crazy Now
  5. Ann Sophie – Jump The Gun / Black Smoke
  6. Fahrenhaidt – Frozen Silence / Mother Earth
  7. Laing – Zeig Deine Muskeln / Wechselt Die Beleuchtung
  8. Andreas Kümmert – Home Is In My Hands / Heart Of Stone

I’m still in shock.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 201510:28 pm

Shockingly Ann Sophie’s reprise performance isn’t quite as assured as her earlier ones! Haha you’ve got to love Eurovision.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:25 pm

Public is booing her and she asks them whether they want her to Vienna…

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:25 pm

Ann Sophie is now also confused. She is doubting to accept the invitation to go to Vienna…

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 201510:25 pm

Look if neither of you want to bloody go just give it to Laing!!

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 201510:24 pm

Pahahahaha it’s chaos!

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 201510:24 pm

DRAMA

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:23 pm

Or not…

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:23 pm

ANN SOPHIE IS GOING TO VIENNA

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:23 pm

ANDREAS HAS JUST HANDED BACK HIS TICKET

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:23 pm

WAIT

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 201510:22 pm

I suppose Heart of Stone will do well out of the jury ranking system at Eurovision. It’s the one nobody will remember so they’ll just stick it in 9th.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:21 pm

HEART OF STONE TO VIENNA

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:21 pm

ANDREAS KÜMMERT

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:20 pm

The winner of USfÖ is…

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:20 pm

Here we go…

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:20 pm

Ann Sophie is almost dying on that stage. Andreas is incredibly shy…

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 201510:20 pm

Oh good, Ann Sophie got her little interview bit in before the lines closed.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:19 pm

Results are really imminent now… Who is Germany sending to Vienna?

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 201510:19 pm

I like Conchita’s new single, but not enough that I won’t be utterly sick of it come May.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:18 pm

One minute left to vote…

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:16 pm

A decent performance here from Conchita. She does own a stage.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 201510:14 pm

Andreas also did very well there. I just find the song so boring and it doesn’t matter how well he sells it. I can’t see either of these songs doing particularly well for Germany sadly. It doesn’t matter though because I’m thinking it’s Game Over – Andreas will walk this. He really has the crowd behind him.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 201510:14 pm

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:14 pm

Time for Conchita Wurst now! You Are Unstoppable now.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:11 pm

So this guy is ill, hasn’t been able to sing all day and then he does THIS? Good grief, this guy has a VOICE. This song is nice and uptempo. He’s no glamour, he’s no showcase, but he’s the essence of voice and song count. Brilliant stuff, Andreas.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 201510:08 pm

Good job Ann Sophie. It definitely seemed like a plucky runner-up moment sadly and no doubt Andreas will be a “moment” or whatever, but yes she couldn’t really have done much better there.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:06 pm

Ann Sophie is now performing Black Smoke again. She has a lot more sass now, as if she’s got confirmation that she can go all out now. And good on her, this performance is really good and her voice is pretty damn good.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 201510:01 pm

I think my stream is behind. But yes…out of those two, Ann Sophie please. Seriously.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:01 pm

Biggest surprise in there, the only two singing in German are now out. Germany is going English.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 201510:00 pm

ANDREAS KÜMMERT – HEART OF STONE

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:59 pm

ANN SOPHIE – BLACK SMOKE

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:59 pm

Results time. Two to the superfinal now

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:58 pm

Voting closed now!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:58 pm

So Andreas is ill, has a 40C fever and could only rehearse once. And then that voice…

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:57 pm

One minute left to vote!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:54 pm

Another recap!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:53 pm

Here’s Stefanie Heinzmann now!

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:52 pm

Why couldn’t this have been in the running?

I hate it when the interval act is better than the competing songs.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:51 pm

I think you’ll probably get your way there.

Not that I’m even going to try and predict this…

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:50 pm

I just love these songs… Ok if I need to choose 2… Das Gold Von Morgen and Heart Of Stone.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:48 pm

Oh for heaven’s sake Nick that’s most of the songs, play the game here!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:47 pm

My preferences are Das Gold von Morgen, Wechselt Die Beleuchtung, Heart of Stone and Black Smoke. Or Glück.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:47 pm

My preferences would be ‘Black Smoke’ and ‘Zeig Deine Muskeln’

I’ll be lucky to get either of those in the final two.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:45 pm

Andreas Kümmert – Heart Of Stone

Seriously couldn’t he have ironed a shirt or something? If Germany must send him then this would be vastly preferable to his utterly bland first offering. He’s got a VERY good voice and he uses it much more in this song. Slightly more uptempo but still completely middle-of-the-road background music. I’d imagine this will be the one though.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:45 pm

Heart Of Stone

For the fourth time in this round, a MUCH better song than the first song. Nice and uptempo, his performance is still rubbish, but his voice is out of this world. Stunning. Brilliant. A frontrunner.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:42 pm

Last act now! Andreas Kümmert!

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:42 pm

Laing – Wechselt Die Beleuchtung

I wasn’t sure what to make of this at the start but it grew throughout! Very understated moody electro with a touch of dubstep throughout. I love these girls’ harmonies, and I really like the melody here. Good convertible-clothing moment towards the end. I think I still would slightly prefer their remake of ‘Let’s Get Physical’ to progress, but as long as they’re in the final two I’ll be happy.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:40 pm

Wechselt Die Beleuchtung

Also, much better than their first song. I really enjoy this, it’s really quirky. Whereas their first song was just WEIRD, this is pretty good. Change the lighting they say and the light effects are odd. I quite enjoyed that.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:37 pm

Laing is performing now! Wechselt Die Beleuchtung for them.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:37 pm

Ann Sophie – Black Smoke

OK she’s REALLY reminding me of Lena here. Something about the vocal range she’s using in this song that really sounds similar. This is co-written by Ella Eyre incidentally. It’s got much more of a chorus than her last song, it’s fairly catchy and she performs it well. I just hope there isn’t a vote split with her first song.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:36 pm

Black Smoke

A MUCH MUCH better song for Ann Sophie here. I really like this. I disliked Jump The Gun, but this works. Amazing. Written by Ella Eyre, this was awesome. Dressed in black and white, this works. Yes.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:33 pm

Black Smoke now for Ann Sophie!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:32 pm

Das Gold von Morgen

Yes, this is stunning. A gorgeous ballad with a gorgeous chorus. The little orchestra behind her is absolutely amazing. Yes, the lyrics to this are the most brilliant thing ever.
And let me just say this: Yes, I know we have many ballads already. But choosing late doesn’t mean the countries before you have more right to choose a specific type of song. If Germany wants a ballad, doesn’t mean they can’t because Greece already chose one.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:32 pm

Alexa Feser – Das Gold von Morgen

OK look. This is probably my favourite song of the selection so far. It’s a very lovely melodic piano ballad, with strings backing it up. Alexa sings it well too. But I’m now just SO repelled at the thought of another ballad going to Eurovision. I could have got behind it if it were Fahrenhaidt because it was kind of striking and atmospheric, but this is a fairly conventional piano ballad. Good, but please don’t send it and drag the tempo down even more Germany.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:28 pm

I’m so happy that she’s performing a ballad. I’m so excited at the prospect of Germany sending another ballad to Eurovision.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:27 pm

Yes, Peter, they are saying how happy they are to have qualified. And they’ve recorded it before the show…

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:27 pm

So now Alexa is about to perform again…

Nick can you confirm whether the artists are indeed doing a VT talking about how chuffed they are to have qualified that was recorded BEFORE the show…?

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:27 pm

Here we go, round 2. Alexa Feser with Das Gold von Morgen.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:26 pm

Guy Sebastian has is getting a little VT now explaining that he’ll be representing Australia at Eurovision. Good exposure. Lots of songs in this video that are better than his Eurovision song will be. Also a little message from Guy to the German finalists.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:25 pm

I want Alexa. Now.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:25 pm

That’s probably made beardy the frontrunner…not happy about that.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:24 pm

Well then…. I’m surprised. No Noize Generation, no Faun and most of all… NO FAHRENHAIDT!

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:24 pm

WELL! That’s a turn-up for the books!! Fahrenhaidt out in the first round of voting!!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:24 pm

ANDREAS KÜMMERT

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:24 pm

LAING

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:24 pm

ANN SOPHIE

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:23 pm

ALEXA FESER

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:23 pm

Now, results time for round 1. Which four will qualify!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:22 pm

Janine is now in the green room interviewing some contestants. Faun say that, even though they’re experienced, they were still nervous for the show tonight, as it’s so different from their normal performances! Ann Sophie thinks it’s incredible she’s even there!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:20 pm

Barbara is saying she now needs to talk this minute until voting is closed… Voting is now closed, though!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:20 pm

Time for the last minute to vote.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:19 pm

Matt Doiron almost agrees. He wants Faun, Fahrenhaidt, Ann Sophie and Laing!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:17 pm

@DarkClo5 has said on Twitter that he wants Noize Generation, Ann Sophie, Fahrenhaidt and Andreas Kümmert to qualify!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:15 pm

Interesting to see who’ll qualify… Now, an interval with Mark Forster.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:13 pm

I’ll go with Ann Sophie, Fahrenhaidt, Andreas Kümmert and Faun.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:12 pm

Oh actually, that first song that I absolutely didn’t miss actually sounds quite nice…

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:12 pm

I’m going Fahrenhaidt, Ann Sophie, Alexa Feser and Faun.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:11 pm

Four of these will qualify… Let’s try and guess who

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:09 pm

Time to vote now. Four of these will qualify for Round Two!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:09 pm

Home Is In My Hands

It’s his brand to be just about the voice. He could’ve dressed up a little though…
The song is decent, but it doesn’t really do much for three entire minutes. He’s a really good singer, but I’m not sure this will work in Eurovision…

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:09 pm

Song 8: Andreas Kümmert – Home Is In My Hands

It’s an acoustic ballad that reminds me a bit of the Goo Goo Dolls, or something by Ronan Keating – the guy’s voice sounds a bit like the latter. He looks nothing like Ronan though. He looks like one of the members of Pollapönk without the zany outfits. Not that I’m marking this down because of how he looks. I think it’s utter dirge anyway.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:07 pm

I hadn’t even noticed that… Now I did…

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:05 pm

I don’t like that we get about a minute of the studio version playing in the intro VTs by the way.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:04 pm

Last act of round 1 now! Andreas Kümmert.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20159:04 pm

Song 7: Laing – Zeig Deine Muskeln

Well it’s certainly a good staging choice for what is the kind of gym-pop that was around in the 80s. I have to admit it’s pretty catchy, and the harmonies are remarkably together for the whole thing being performed on exercise bikes! I’m impressed at that at least. OK the whole thing is a little bit silly but it’s a bit of fun…of course I’m not sure it’d work in German at Eurovision.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20159:03 pm

Zeig Deine Muskeln

A song about the main sport when going to a gym: flirting. They’re honouring triceps and biceps, while sitting on bikes and singing this. It’s different. Different more than anything. And shit. Also shit, yes.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:59 pm

Now, the most controversial act… Laing.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20158:58 pm

Song 6: Fahrenhaidt – Frozen Silence

So this is the overwhelming favourite to get the ticket to Vienna. I can see why…it’s a very good quality song. Beautifully orchestrated, it’s a bit like ‘Nocturne’ with lyrics. However it needs a lot of work to make it the proper moment it could be. Firstly, the ballet dancers needs to go (why is that a THING at Eurovision?!) and also I think the lead singer needs not to be styled like she’s just gone to the shops. Promising though.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:58 pm

Frozen Silence

Possibly the most hyped entry in the Eurovision fan world at the moment. A very, very athmospheric, nature type song. Live, it doesn’t work. They say it’s nature style what they do, but the stage was black and white, ballet girls on there… It just doesn’t work. Even Amanda’s vocals don’t work…

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:54 pm

Next up is Fahrenhaidt!

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20158:53 pm

Song 5: Ann Sophie – Jump The Gun

Here’s this year’s wildcard (apparently), Ann Sophie. Quite a catchy understated pop song and reminds me a bit of something Lena would come out with. In fact Ann Sophie reminds me of slightly less tomboyish Lena too, without the annoying faux-cockney accent. She’s a good performer, and very assured for being the “rank amateur” of the line-up. I couldn’t see the song doing all that well at Eurovision but it should be enough to see her through to the next stage at least.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:52 pm

Jump The Gun

A cabaret style/funky song from Ann Sophie here. She is a great vocalist, a great performer as well. Big flashing lights behind her, she’s dressed in a red suit. It works.
But what doesn’t? The song. It’s disappointing, underwhelming and she deserves better.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:48 pm

And here comes our wildcard girl, Ann Sophie!

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20158:47 pm

Song 4: Noize Generation – A Song For You

This is VERY Calvin Harris. A modern commercial dance track, which would be very welcome at this year’s contest, that’s for sure. Bit of a strange choice to have the human light-up robot things on stage, but it’s not terrible and there’s lots of pyro and lighting action. The singer gives a very nervy vocal though and that has let it down quite a bit. The crowd loved it though.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:45 pm

A Song For You

I have a hard time commenting on this. You know, Patrik’s bit is a tad repetitive and I’m not one for instrumental DJ bits. Meh! Patrik’s vocals aren’t completely on key either and the stage performance is a bit odd. It definitely stands out, it does, but does it stand out in a positive way?

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20158:45 pm

I’m glad Dr. Eurovision has finally thrown his hat into the ring and had a go at entering a song himself.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20158:41 pm

Song 3: Faun – Hörst Du Die Trommeln

Well this is very atmospheric, and looks great on the stage. A sort of Celtic / medieval thing going on here…in German. I do like this in theory but I don’t actually think the song itself has much to it. No real hook to latch onto and despite the aesthetics and the instrumentation, it kind of washed over me.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:41 pm

Song 4 now, Noize Generation!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:40 pm

Hörst Du Die Trommeln

So for a start, this music has nothing to do with music as it was made during the Middle Ages. Just making that clear.
Secondly, I do like it. In studio. I suddenly get why Oliver s.Tyr is never the lead vocalist. He needs backing all the time from the woman who normally does the lead. It’s very ‘culturally medieval’ – which basically means it looks like how people expect the Middle Ages. Even when it has nothing to do with the Middle Ages.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:36 pm

Grmpf, I’ve studied the German Middle Ages and what they’re saying… well isn’t really true. Not a good start, Faun, not a good start.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:36 pm

Welcome to Peter! Now, time for Faun!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:35 pm

Glück

I study German, if one sings in German, it already has an advantage for me. Alexa is a great performer, she’s forgiven for dropping a few notes there. But she owns that stage, she got a massive cheer. She starts off at the piano and then walks away from it. Very atmospheric, midtempo – I’m a fan. Her second song is better though.

Peter Dunwoody
March 5, 20158:34 pm

Good evening Europe!!!

I’ve totally been here the whole time…anyway that first song was rubbish.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:29 pm

And here’s Alexa Feser now!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:28 pm

Shine Shine Shine

These guys have a nice concept, the song is kind of catchy and Steffen is really a good performer. Sarah just doesn’t really do it for me, her voice is a bit childish, a bit odd. It’s her thing, but not my thing. The stage performance is also odd, it’s reminding many of The Common Linnets, but without the magic for me. They’re quite popular, but I’m not sure they’ll make it through.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:23 pm

No time to waste, here’s song 1: Mrs. Greenbird and their Shine Shine Shine

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:20 pm

So it’s Barbara’s birthday, Conchita just started singing Happy Birthday!

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:19 pm

And here’s our host for tonight, Barbara Schöneberger.

Nick van Lith
March 5, 20158:18 pm
