Portugal will select their entry for Eurovision tonight. Festival da Canção is, as is traditional, the way to select Portugal’s entry for Eurovision. Six songs are still competing in order to represent Portugal in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015. Or five… We actually don’t quite know. Eurovision veteran Simone de Oliveira has said she’d rather not do Eurovision, but we don’t know if she would actually do a ‘Kümmert’ if she’d win tonight! All the reason to tune in for Portugal’s Festival da Canção tonight! The show will start at 22.25 CET and is scheduled to last just over two hours.

Tonight’s line-up:

  1. Gonçalo Tavares – Tu Tens Uma Mágica
  2. Yola Dinis – Outra Vez Primavera
  3. Leonor Andrade – Há Um Mar Que Nos Separa
  4. Simone de Oliveira – À Espera Das Canções
  5. Teresa Radamento – Um Fado Em Viena
  6. José Freitas – Mal Menor (Ninguém Me Guia À Razão)

Nick van Lith
March 8, 201512:13 am

Just one more recap then… I actually quite like all three songs, but this’ll be between Leonor and Teresa.

Paulo de Carvalho is on stage now, performing E Depois Do Adeus. You may say: Boring old interval, so what? But nope, this song plays a big part in Portuguese history. On the morning of 24th April 1974, the Portuguese army took over the national radio station, planning to take over power from the dictator. The starting signal for the Carnation Revolution was indeed this song! Quite the story…

Another recap now, so I expect they won’t actually perform again.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201511:55 pm

Arianna is very vocal on Twitter. She wants Leonor. Only Leonor.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201511:51 pm

So out flies the legend that is Simone de Oliveira, out flies the big favourite Yola Dinis and less surprising, José Freitas.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201511:50 pm

Well. I’m in shock.

Nick van Lith

Nick van Lith

Nick van Lith

Let me know on @escXtra on Twitter!

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201511:20 pm

So that’s all songs done now. Six have performed, three will make the cut to the superfinal. Which three will that be?

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201511:14 pm

Tu Tens Uma Mágica

A proper uptempo thing here from Gonçalo. It’s something different tonight, but I suddenly see why Portugal sends many ballads: that’s what they do best. I quite like this, it’s nice and cheerful. Vocally he’s pretty good, nothing spectacular though.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201511:10 pm

And here comes song six already, Gonçalo Tavares.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201511:09 pm

Um Fado Em Viena

Nice and fado there from Teresa. Look, you can say what you want about Portugal, but they stay true to their own music. Results or no results. This has a nice bit of waltz mixed through and it works. The melody is lovely. Teresa is pretty damn freaking excellent vocally.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201511:04 pm

Up now is Teresa Radamanto!

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201511:03 pm

A bit of backstage chatting now!

March 7, 201510:58 pm

À Espera Das Canções

I don’t speak Portuguese, but this song is unbelievable. Yes, you could say a 77 year old should not be in Eurovision, a 77 year old should give a new generation a chance. But this woman can bring feelings across like no one else. Absolutely brilliant, so incredibly beautiful. I’m amazed. Loved every second of that and will be listening to it a lot.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201510:54 pm

Here comes the legend that is Simone de Oliveira!

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201510:53 pm

Há Um Mar Que Nos Separa

Whereas Yola’s song is just beautiful and stunning, this is actually a great early 00s pop tune. Her voice is pretty good, it works quite well, but I fear the acoustics in the studio aren’t too brilliant. Add a bit of English and this could do quite well in Eurovision. My Portuguese friend Júlio just said her pronounciation isn’t always too good, which may bring it down a bit… Hm.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201510:48 pm

And here’s Leonor Andrade!

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201510:45 pm

Outra Vez Primavera

Big girl, you go! What a stunning song, a stunning performance. She doesn’t have the popstar look, but she’s an amazing singer. Call her a second Chiara, but she’d possibly deserve to do as well as Chiara. This song is really good, it screams Portugal, she’s vocally stunning.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201510:41 pm

Here’s the big favourite, Yola Dinis.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201510:38 pm

José Freitas – Mal Menor (Ninguém Me Guia À Razão)

Like a soulful ballad here from José Freitas. He was the jury pick last Thursday, so I doubt he’ll do much, but this song isn’t half bad. José is showing off vocally, which works. Sometimes. Not always.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201510:36 pm

Right then, the UK has just premiered their song and in Portugal we’re getting ready for song 1, by José Freitas.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201510:30 pm

So just a little info then, we’ll be having the six songs first and then we’re up for a superfinal between three songs.

Nick van Lith
March 7, 201510:29 pm

We’re being welcomed by the hosts after an opening number.
