Danish Pastries

It’s that time of year again, we’ve had the annual January leak of the songs so for many of us, tonight’s acts have been on rotation for the past month.  Check out Nick & Peter‘s review of the song’s here if you haven’t managed to hear them yet.

Who’s singing what and when?

The show kicks off at 20:00 CET on DR1 and the running order is as follows:

01. David Jay – Rays of Sunlight
02. Simone – Heart Shaped Hole
03. Bracelet – Breakaway
04. Sophia Nohr – Blue Horizon
05. Veronicas Illusion – The Wrong Kind
06. Lighthouse X – Soldiers of Love
07. Kristel Lisberg – Who Needs a Heart
08. Jessica – Break It Good
09. Muri & Mario – To stjerner
10. Anja Nissen – Never Alone

How to follow the show?

It look’s like DR may have geo-locked the stream to Danish residents this time, judging by the error message shown here. We advise you to check the link just before show time to see if they have a change of heart.

Fear not though, if a working stream isn’t available – we’ll still be here providing live updates of the show via the live blog below. (No need to refresh!)

Good evening! Welcome to the live blog of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. The show is set to begin in 5 minutes, though right now DR 1 has some kind of David Attenborough show on which I’m paying far too much attention to.

Good news if you’re hoping to watch online – it look’s like DR have lifted the geo restriction on their live stream which you can watch here. http://www.dr.dk/event/melodigrandprix/grand-prix-live

And we’re off with the first song from David Jay.

01. David Jay – Rays of Sunlight

David has clearly been inspired by Bruno Mars with his performance of ‘Rays of Sunlight’ which can be compared to “Uptown Funk”. Vocally there’s nothing much wrong here, he’s carrying the song well.

02. Simone – Heart Shaped Hole

Simone is actually the hot favourite to win tonight according to bookmakers who have had her as front runner since the songs were leaked released last month. Dressed in a grey sparkly dress and standing among a huge material-made heart, Simone is clearly putting everything into the song itself rather than putting on a show. She actually seemed to struggle reaching some of the notes during the first chorus and at times appears to sing off-sync with the backing track. Whilst its still a good performance, I’m not quite sure if it’s as ‘safe’ as people think.

03. Bracelet – Breakaway

Bringing a bit of Sweden into this selection is Bracelet with Breakaway. The first thing I’ve got to say is what good stage presense this group has, managing to get the audience on board by the first chorus. They have good chemistry and work the cameras very well. Vocally, this is really good. I can see a lot of people voting for this one.

04. Sophia Nohr – Blue Horizon

After a small montage about the Olsen Brothers, we’re back with Sophia Nohr and ‘Blue Horizon’,. This one has an interesting stage show with some fake trees and a giant version of Sophia’s face on the LED screen behind her (which is actually quite disturbing). She’s doing well though, just a few flat notes here and there in the second verse. I think this song however doesn’t come across as well live as it does in the recorded version.

05. Veronicas Illusion – The Wrong Kind

Hard to believe but we are already approaching the halfway stage. Veronica is going for a teenage school girl look in this performance and is accompanied by four female backing dancers. Whilst I do quite like this, I don’t think it will appeal to everyone and can come across as too hyper. I think my main gripe with Veronica is she just isn’t interacting with the camera’s so it all looks a bit messy.

And if you wondered, this is my setup 🙂

Danny Ni
February 13, 20167:45 pm

After yet another small montage (on something I have no clue about!), we’re onto song 6

06. Lighthouse X – Soldiers of Love

In contrast to Veronicas, Lighthouse X are maintaining contact with the camera throughout this performance. All three members are dressed in black and have kept things relatively simple on stage, just three LED lit mic stands and white lighting. To be honest though, it’s working wonderfully for them – there really isn’t much to fault here. My only criticism is the song itself, I just don’t know if it will catch people on first listen.

07. Kristel Lisberg – Who Needs a Heart

Kristel is joined on stage by a violinist and has a stunning backdrop of white smoke which changes dramatically to flames as the chorus kicks in. I’ve got to be honest, I wasn’t too phased by the studio version of this but hearing and seeing it live tonight, I’m really impressed and think I may have overlooked this one. Vocally on point, hitting those high notes repeatedly as the song builds towards the end. Can see this one scoring quite high.

08. Jessica – Break It Good

Jessica has one of the most radio friendly songs in tonight’s selection with ‘Break it good’. There is definitely a reggae vibe going on stage here, as she is joined by two female dancers who all appear to be ‘dutty whining’ in sync. For the first time this evening, we can actually hear the crowd applauding during the chorus which is always a good sign. She also has very good charisma and appears to be a natural on the stage. Prior to the show, this was 40/1 to win tonight – I’m beginning to wish I’d put some money on it!

09. Muri & Mario – To stjerner

I’m not going to lie, “To stjerner” has been the song I’ve had on replay since the songs were released last month. This also has the audience clapping right from the off as Mario takes to the stage. Again, no big stage show here – just Murio on keyboard and Mario taking the lead vocally (or it could be the other way around?!) . I can understand why people may not take to this as it may come across as rather bland but personally, I think it is one of the most original songs in the selection.

10. Anja Nissen – Never Alone

The final song of the night now, Anja Nissen with ‘Never Alone’. Anja begins with great interaction with the camera, smiling throughout. One thing that is noticeable here is how comfortable she is on stage – vocally though, there are a lot of notes out of tune and a few stops for breath during the verse. It has the crowd applause though, especially as the song reaches its climax with Pyro’s lighting up the stage. Besides the flat notes, this is definitely a contender.

And there we have it, all ten songs have been performed. We’re now being a shown a short recap.

Danny Ni
February 13, 20168:14 pm

Judging by the recap, I think my money is on Anja winning this.

Oh hello Junior Eurovision, I think we’re a bit early aren’t we? – The stage has been taken over by kids for this next performance.
