One of tonight’s many national selections is taking place in Switzerland. At “ESC 2016 – Entscheidungsshow” we will see six artists performing one song of their own as well as one cover song each. The winner will be chosen by a 50/50 combination of jury and televoting.

This is the running order for tonight’s show:

  • Vincent Gross – Half a smile / cover: Astronaut by Sido feat. Andreas Bourani
  • Bella C – Another World / cover: Empire State Of Mind (Part II) by Alicia Keys
  • Kaceo – Disque d’Or / cover: Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles
  • Theo – Because Of You / cover: Photograph by Ed Sheeran
  • Rykka – The Last Of Our Kind / cover: Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Golding
  • Stanley Miller – Feel The Love / cover: Hello by Adele

The show will start at 20:10 CET. You can follow the live stream on SRF and witness even Conchita Wurst on stage again performing Rise Like A Phoenix together with the 11-year-old winner of the Swiss talent show “Die grössten Schweizer Talente”, Flavio Rizzello. I’ll be right here keeping you informed and sharing my opinion about everything that’s going on in our live blog. You can even follow us on Twitter @escXtra and use the hashtag #srfesc to share your own thoughts on the Swiss national final.

Until the show starts you can check out Peter’s review of the six entries.

Welcome to the liveblog for the Swiss national final! It’s starting with Conchita and Firestorm – there is one reason to watch the show, let’s hope it won’t be the only one…

Conchita said she is happy not having to vote again like in Austria’s national final yesterday.

Lys Assia is in the audience. That lady seems to be everywhere.

We are ready to get started!
1. Vincent Gross – Half a smile
Really?! Smiley emoticons in the background… The song is not bad and quite catchy, but that smiley overload is kind of annoying.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20167:25 pm

I don’t really buy his never ending happiness, sorry.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20167:28 pm

2. Bella C – Another World
The Bulgarian comes along with a James Bond kind of song. Comparisons with Conchita to be expected.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20167:31 pm

Pretty powerful ballad and a strong voice, not sure the Swiss will vote for it, though.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20167:35 pm

Now, my personal favorite is coming up:
3. Kaceo – Disque d’Or
A goofy band with a serious message in a french song about the superficial and materialistic music industry.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20167:37 pm

A giraffe, a bear, and a singer riding on a unicorn on stage – what’s not to like? So untypical for Switzerland, would be a complete surprise at Eurovision. I doubt the Swiss have the guts to send it, though.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20167:39 pm

Understandingly, the band is a bit exhausted after all the action. Having a lot of fun though – and isn’t that what should count?!

4. Theo – Because Of You
Another guy with a guitar, I like him more than the first one – until he gets to that ooh-ooh-ooh-part. Also, the song is pretty boring. And I don’t understand why there is a tree on stage. And why there is toilet paper hanging from the tree.

5. Rykka – The Last Of Our Kind
A born Canadian already worked for Switzerland once. But can Rykka follow in Céline’s footsteps? The song might actually have good chances tonight. But I’m not a fan of people sitting on the floor on stage. And she should not have used the curling iron. I liked the studio version of the song way more than her live performance. White dress, fog and wind machine are also not really original. The audience seemed to like it, though.

We already made it to the final artist:
6. Stanley Miller – Feel The Love
Stanley is originally from the US, now living in Spain. He came to Switzerland with the Zurich gospel choir. Quite frankly, I don’t like this – too much dance, too much lights, too much trying. I’d prefer the choir on its own.

Sophie Haustein

Before the show, I would have said that Rykka has the best chances. But after her performance I’m not so sure anymore. Maybe the smiley guy will make it after all, but I think that would lead to another Eurovision final without Switzerland. Personally, I still like Kaceo the best.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20168:08 pm

To get another impression of the artists’ vocal skills, we will now have a round of cover songs. I think this is a bit unnecessary as it should be all about the future Eurovision song, but what can you do…

1. Vincent Gross – Astronaut by Sido feat. Andreas Bourani
I’m very surprised and LOVE this calmer version of the song! But I still think Vincent should stop smiling.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20168:17 pm

2. Bella C – Empire State Of Mind by Alicia Keys
Very courageous choice of song, she pulls off the chorus, but her facial expressions are a little off and annoying me.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20168:22 pm

3. Kaceo – Video Kills The Radio Song by The Buggles
I’m becoming more and more a fan of Kaceo, those are some very likeable guys. There is even another unicorn sitting on the drums this time. And they just mashed in a surprising part of Smells Like Teen Spirit. They just do whatever they want, I like it!

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20168:28 pm

4. Theo – Photograph by Ed Sheeran
I’m not a fan of his voice turning squeaky at times, apart from that it’s nice, but that’s about it.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20168:33 pm

5. Rykka – Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding
She didn’t use the time to straighten her hair, such a shame! Her voice sounds kind of flat in this song, not a perfect match in my opinion.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20168:39 pm

6. Stanley Miller – Hello by Adele
Why oh why did you chose Adele? He should have gone with Lionel Richie’s Hello. Again, way too much trying. Not even the silver bow tie could save that.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20168:49 pm

So, all the six artist have presented their own song and the cover song now. It’s time to vote. Judging from the audience’s reaction Rykka might win with The Last Of Our Kind after all, even though I think she screwed up her live performance. Another favorite could be Mr. Smiley Vincent Gross with Half A Smile. I still wish Switzerland would surprise us by chosing Kaceo – they would bring so much fun to the Eurovision world. But I highly doubt that the Swiss will make such a bold choice.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20168:56 pm

The infamous Mélanie René is part of the jury tonight next to 9 other people from the music industry. Mélanie talks about her Eurovision experience and her success. The part where she ended up last in the semi-final is politely left out.

February 13, 20168:58 pm

While the votes are being counted we get to listen to Rise Like A Phoenix by the 11-year-old Flavio Rizzello in all his cuteness joined by Conchita herself.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20168:59 pm

What a shame that Flavio is too young to be sent to Eurovision.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20169:01 pm

Even Conchita is completely stunned by Flavio, who won the talent show “Die grössten Schweizer Talente” with his performance of Rise Like A Phoenix last year.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20169:02 pm

Conchita is nervous to sing the song herself ever again after having listened to Flavio.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20169:06 pm

All the artist come together on stage to receive the results!

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20169:06 pm

Love the way Kaceo’s lead singer is clapping his hands like crazy.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20169:08 pm

Kaceo is still having fun despite all the tension and sinking down on the floor.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20169:08 pm

The audience is definitely rooting for Rykka.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20169:09 pm

And the winner is… RYKKA!

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20169:11 pm

Rykka will represent Switzerland in Stockholm – not really surprising. If she works on her live performance until May (and straightens her hair), it could work out quite okay for Switzerland this year.

Sophie Haustein
February 13, 20169:22 pm

This is it from me for tonight. I’m still sad that we won’t see Kaceo in Stockholm, even though it was to be expected…

I’m German and have been Eurovision-addicted ever since Lena won in 2010 – it’s a young love but all the more passionate! As a volunteer at the Song Contest 2015 in Vienna I got connected to the escXtra team. I’m scared of the day that Ralph Siegel will win again.
