We’re near the end of a week full of Italian culture, with the 2016 Festival di Sanremo reaching its climax today. Sixteen acts will be fighting for the Italian crown in the Teatro Ariston, where the winner will be offered the right of representing Italy in Stockholm. Mind you, the winner could turn down the opportunity.

Fifteen acts have already qualified, the sixteenth act will be determined during the show from the contestants who were at risk tonight. Below you can find the running order for the qualified acts:

  1. Francesca Michielin – Nessun Grado Di Separazione
  2. Alessio Bernabei – Noi Siamo Infinito
  3. Clementino – Quando Sono Lontano
  4. Patty Pravo – Cieli Immensi
  5. Lorenzo Fragola – Infinite Volte
  6. Noemi – La Borsa Di Una Donna
  7. Elio e le Storie Tese – Vincere L’Odio
  8. Arisa – Guardando Il Cielo
  9. Stadio – Un Giorno Mi Dirai
  10. Annalisa – Il Diluvio Universale
  11. Rocco Hunt – Wake Up
  12. Dolcenera – Ora O Mai Più (Le Cose Cambiano)
  13. Enrico Ruggeri – Il Primo Amore Non Si Scorda Mai
  14. Giovanni Caccamo & Deborah Iurato – Via Da Qui
  15. Valerio Scanu – Finalmente Piove

The following five acts are at risk. One of them will join the aforementioned line-up:

  • Bluvertigo – Semplicemente
  • Dear Jack – Mezzo Respiro
  • Irene Fornaciari – Blu
  • Neffa – Sogni E Nostalgia
  • Zero Assoluto – Di Me E Di Te

Buonasera! We’re live from the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo for the 66th Festival di Sanremo.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20167:52 pm

Televoting for those five at risk (Zero Assoluto, Irene Fornaciari, Neffa, Dear Jack and Bluvertigo) is open for a few more minutes. We’ll then find out which of them joins the other fifteen finalists.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20167:55 pm

Stop al televoto! We’ll soon figure out who the last qualifier is. I hope for Zero Assoluto.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20167:55 pm

But before that, we’re going to listen to ‘Amen’ by Francesco Gabbiani. He won the newcomer (Nuove Proposte) section last night.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20167:59 pm

‘Amen’ is quite nice. We’re now getting a video connection to Il Volo, last year’s winners of Sanremo.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20168:05 pm

The final qualifier for the final sixteen is Irene Fornaciari and her song ‘Blu’.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20168:06 pm

As a bonus for being the last qualifier, Irene Fornaciari will perform last.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20168:14 pm

Before we’ve even had a song, we’re having an interval of a man dancing to We Will Rock You…

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20168:22 pm

It took a while, but now we’re getting our first competing song: Francesca Michielin and ‘Nessun Grado Di Separazione’.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20168:26 pm

Francesca Michielin – Nessun Grado Di Separazione

Francesca looks a bit like a puppet, with very pale make-up and then very red cheeks. She’s not quite as stable vocally as she needs to be. The song is ok, but not quite out there enough to win from #1.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20168:28 pm

Moving on to song #2, Alessio Bernabei and ‘Noi Siamo Infinito’.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20168:32 pm

Alessio Bernabei – Noi Siamo Infinito

Vocally this is nowhere near where it should be. Alessio can’t actually sing, but we knew that from last year when he entered with Dear Jack. The song is nice and quite anthemic and is rather modern.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20168:39 pm

Clementino – Quando Sono Lontano

A rapper is never a good idea for me, but it only gets worse when a rapper decides he should try singing. It doesn’t work at all and the ‘nananana’ near the end is quite ridiculous.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20168:41 pm

Up next is a true veteran: Patty Pravo, singing Cieli Immensi.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20168:45 pm

Patty Pravo – Cieli Immensi

The years have not been kind for Patty. The music here is nice and with a decent vocal and performance, this could work. But Patty simple doesn’t have any sort of voice anymore. However, in just three days on YouTube, this ragged up about 350,000 views. I’m not counting this out.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20169:01 pm

Back from a lot of talking! Lorenzo Fragola is next.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20169:05 pm

Lorenzo Fragola – Infinite Volte

Musically, this is tolerable, but that’s where it ends. Lorenzo doesn’t look all too happy and to get that in a close-up isn’t the smartest move. He sounds like he’s squeezing his voice a little. Not sure on this.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20169:11 pm

Noemi – La Borsa Di Una Donna

This is a typical Noemi song. Her voices shines through incredibly well and she looks great. It’s a ballad which builds rather nicely. I’m under no illusions though: This was at risk after the first night, so I can’t see this troubling the top three.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20169:30 pm

Elio e le Storie Tese – Vincere L’Odio

I’ve managed to get over the shock of this as I’ve now heard it three times. Tonight, the band is performing like Kiss, dressed up with make-up and outfits. The song is actually a mash-up of about ten other, terrible songs. It’s more comedy than a song and as comedy, it’s not bad, but Sanremo is not a comedy contest.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20169:50 pm

We had a 20 minute interval now before moving on to a favourite: Arisa, singing ‘Guardando Il Cielo’.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20169:54 pm

Arisa – Guardando Il Cielo

This is the girl that said she’d love Eurovision. And then said she didn’t. Her face is rather serious tonight, might have to do with the song. It’s dreamy like you’re used to from Arisa and it’s really nice. Vocal control is there too.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 20169:58 pm

Next up is Stadio with ‘Un Giorno Mi Dirai’. They won cover night on Thursday. A force to be reckoned with?

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201610:03 pm

Stadio – Un Giorno Mi Dirai

His voice is very rough and it gets rougher as we progress in the song. I like the song in itself – I don’t understand the lyrics, but with the background, it looks as if the message is nice. There’s a nice relaxing tune at the start and then it goes more anthemic rock. Not bad and, as they won on Thursday, you can’t rule them out.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201610:06 pm

The favourites keep on coming. Here’s Annalisa.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201610:10 pm

Annalisa – Il Diluvio Universale

I’m getting ‘And I’m Telling You’ vibes here. That might sound odd, but I’ll try to explain it… This is one angry woman telling you what’s going on. She throws out a couple of big notes and the rest is words quickly following each other. It’s not quite talking, but it’s not the melodious singing I’m used to from Annalisa. Good, but not good enough.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201610:22 pm

We’re now having Renato Zero as an interval.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201610:34 pm

I’ve not fallen asleep, by the way. Renato Zero is just still singing.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201610:50 pm

A good half hour since Renato Zero started, he finished. We’re now moving on to Rocco Hunt and ‘Wake Up’.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201610:53 pm

Rocco Hunt – Wake Up

It’s rap, that’s not good for me as you probably know by now. There is a hook to the chorus, but that’s the only positive I have for this song. I however do wonder what rap fans would say about this…?

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201611:02 pm

We saw a Eurovision ad in the commercial break and Carlo Conti mentioned it just now. Before we worry about that, here’s Dolcenera!

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201611:06 pm

Dolcenera – Ora O Mai Più (Le Cose Cambiano)

Dolcenera has impeccable control over her voice. She, after this song, deserves a title of Queen of Soul. This is a fantastic performance of a fantastic song by a fantastic performer. Just too bad she was at risk (why?) after the first night, so not a lot of hope on her chances.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201611:15 pm

Enrico Ruggeri – Il Primo Amore Non Si Scorda Mai

Quite a long title for quite a long song. It’s one of the few uptempo efforts and that makes it a stand-out. It’s grown on me and I’m curious what this’ll do in voting.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201611:20 pm

Giovanni Caccamo & Deborah Iurato – Via Da Qui

Deborah is the experienced one of the duo, but the one shining here is Giovanni. He looks so comfortable on stage and the song, despite being a ballad, is quite catchy. I like this and I think this’ll be up there.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201611:24 pm

Valerio Scanu – Finalmente Piove

It’s raining from his eyes here throughout the song. The video message at the start was emotional and he was high in emotions in the entire song, making his breathing and voice rather unpleasant. The song is very classic, nothing too exciting.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201611:32 pm

Just one song to go, our Irene Fornaciari, who only heard she’d be performing earlier tonight!

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201611:38 pm

Irene Fornaciari – Blu

That’s one blue performance and one incredibly deep voice. I often like deep voices, but it sounds like Irene is on the opposite of helium. I’m not actually a fan.

Nick van Lith
February 13, 201611:43 pm

Stop al televoto! Voting closed, we’ll soon learn the three superfinalists… Who are you hoping for?

Nick van Lith

Now we only need to figure out if they’re going to Eurovision…

Nick van Lith

Nick van Lith

That’s a NO. Stadio will not represent Italy. A matter of time beforre we figure out who will!
