After last week’s first semifinal raised some eyebrows with a disqualification and the return of Ace Wilder, we now travel to the venue which hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, Malmö Arena.

Gina Dirawi will be our host with some creative help from Charlotte Perrelli. Remember that two more songs will go direkt till Friends Arena and another two will go to Andra chansen in just three weeks time.

The show begins at 20:00 and the blog will be live from 19:55.

Tonight’s running order is as follows:

  1. David Lindgren: “We Are Your Tomorrow”
  2. Victor och Natten: “100%”
  3. Molly Pettersson Hammar: “Hunger”
  4. ISA: “I Will Wait”
  5. Krista Siegfrids: “Faller”
  6. Patrik Isaksson, Tommy Nilsson & Uno Svenningsson: “Håll mitt hjärta hårt”
  7. Wiktoria: “Save Me”

Welcome to tonight’s live blog of the second semifinal in Melodifestivalen 2016. Our lovely Matteo will be taking you through the show tonight. If you’re here early and want a song to fill the waiting time, here’s one of my favourite non-qualifying artists ever, Getty Domein, and one of his most recent releases (I want to say “hits” but it definitely wasn’t a hit). Hopefully this will get you in the mood for tonight’s show!

Hello hellooooo. 2 minutes and we will be live (hoping the bloody braodcast will start without glitches unlike last week). There’s a lot of caffeine that I’m going to drink to stay alive. Just bear with me if I go mental. It’s been a long week.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:02 pm

Last week in Gothenburg. Gina and Petra, the six songs, the two in Andra Chansen, the two in the final… nu kör vi.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:05 pm

We go back to 2003 when Charlotte and Lena performed as an interval act. And now Gina Dirawi and Charlotte Perrelli are singing “Flickorna från Sverige” – girls from Sweden – and introducing each other. It seems they wanted to say that La Perrelli is old making her singing “when I won Eurovision [Gina] was 8 years old”.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:10 pm

I understand why Charlotte is doing Malmö. She is probably going to translate in Skånka.

Nope sorry, wrong crowd for this joke.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20167:12 pm

Was that a whore joke Matteo?

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:12 pm

Nah, was a joke about people from the south of Sweden not being easy to understand. But we are ready to move on!

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:14 pm

In 2012 he was a very big debutant of Melodifestivalen and now he’s a big star that is doing Jersey Boys in Sweden. Shall I comment on the fact that he looks younger than me? I won’t.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:18 pm

1. David Lindgren – We Are Your Tomorrow – Anderz Wrethov, Sharon Vaughn, Gustav Efraimsson

It takes too long to the build up. He is a very good performer, but clearly this is not the best song he has ever presented at Melodifestivalen. It has left me a bit speechless because I thought he was going to be a bit more than this. As I have defined it in Italian: it looks like a ballad version of his songs.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20167:19 pm

That David Lindgren performance featured one of the strongest set of 3 minute visuals I think I’ve ever seen in Melodifestivalen.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:23 pm

2. Victor och Natten – 100% – Dag Lundberg, Melker, Jesper Lundh

Good song, but I can’t see much chances. Victor can sing it better than during rehearsal, but he looses his breath by the end of it. It has that indie feelgood vibe that could sound good on a video montage of an holiday between friends in a movie.
Pity this song won’t go far.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20167:23 pm

I have to profess that I ADORE Victor och Natten. There’s absolutely no way that’s coming last and must surely be a contender for the top 5.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:24 pm

Gina is reminding everyone how Molly didn’t get to the final last year. Not saying that it was because no one really understood how to vote with the app and. Well…

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:28 pm

3. Molly Pettersson Hammar – Hunger – Joy Deb, Linnea Deb, Lisa Desmond, Anton Hård af Segerstad, Molly Pettersson Hammar
I can see this qualifying easily. She has quite the voice and she knows how to play it. A lot of pyros for this. This is clearly last year’s song a bit toned down. Let’s see.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20167:28 pm

And now, Matteo, MPH has proven why she didn’t qualify. Her permanent inability to sing live despite being given very radio friendly songs.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:30 pm

La Perrelli is just being there. Sitting. And saying she always watches the show like that. With popcorns and such. And she has just stolen a kid from someone. LET’S MOVE ON TO ISA.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:35 pm

4. Isa – I will wait

Ok, maybe too elegant as a song – but quite a staging. Silhouettes of her (and at a certain point a ghost boy touching her hand) that could really steal the heart of the Swedish voters. She is also the one that everyone was waiting for from this semifinal as she had a big debut last year.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20167:35 pm

Holy fuck ISA is here to win. That was unbelievable. I have goosebumps. That’s going to crush the whole opposition tonight.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:36 pm

And now it’s time for Krista Siegfrids to show that she’s not the weird blond bride from Finland 2013. DING DOOOONG.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:40 pm

5. Krista Siegfrids – Faller
Is it important for you all to know that she’s singing in proper Swedish and not in Finnsvensk? I’ll just leave it there. For you trivia loving people.
It looked like the song was going on without ever changing. I’m not sure people will love it – also because having to import someone from Finland when there could have been a more original Swedish artist…

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:43 pm

6. Patrik Isaksson, Tommy Nilsson & Uno Svenningsson – Håll mitt hjärta hårt
I’m a bit unsure about the intro of this song. This is clearly the older quota – they are definitely great artists in Sweden, but why the hell would you participate at Melodifestivalen? It could damage your image. Anyway. A lot of glitter on the ending – if this was performed only by one person it would have been such a great piece.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:45 pm

Krister Henriksson and Peter Haber are doing dramatic reading of the Schlager classic “Vem é du vill ha” from Kikki, Bettan and Lotta. Such a masterpiece.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20167:45 pm

They might look like a bunch of middle-aged dads but I really do love PUT’s song. All three are former participants and I could see that going through.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:46 pm

Last song up next. A debutant in last position in the draw! It’s Wiktoria that has a song written with composers that have worked with Avicii. Let’s see.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:50 pm

7. Wiktoria – Save Me

I can feel the “Avicii vibe”, but I’m not really bought in this song. To me it’s missing a unique selling proposition: the refrain is stronger than the verses, the staging is very good, but it doesn’t really go anywhere. Wiktoria is a newcomer and I have been really negative tonight.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:51 pm

Charlotte Perrelli sings and introduces the first recap. It’s time to vote people, TIME TO VOTE.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20167:55 pm

For me, Wiktoria was pretty bland the visual gimmick was smart but boring by the end and you could spot it’s flaws.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20167:58 pm

Gina Dirawi is declaring her love to Patrik Isaaksson. And now she’s talking to Krista Siegfrids. She is missing UMK and I don’t understand if this is a way to try and sell her to the Swedish public.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20167:58 pm

After tonight I’m thinking… ISA and David direkt till Finalen, Victor and Krista till AC, Wiktoria fifth, and a fight for last between MPH and PUT

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:00 pm

Probably one of the most important and interesting pieces of reportage. The Schlagerdivas that have been eliminated in the semifinals. Aria Saijonmaa is the first one. Save schlagerdivas.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:03 pm

Charlotte reminds us (while singing a cover of Helene Fischer – if I’m not mistaken) that she is here and she will stay. Yes, it’s a war declaration.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:05 pm

Sverige. Vi har ett resultat. To the second round of voting…

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:06 pm

Krista Siegfrids, Wiktoria, David Lindgren, Isa and…

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:07 pm

Molly Pettersson Hammar with Victor och Natten in 6th place and Patrick, Tommy och Uno in 7th place!

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:13 pm

Voting has just ended so we’ll know who’s going to Stockholm (for the final, not for Eurovision, mind you. It will be nice when they’ll give to the winner a bus ticket to show up in May) in 15 mins!

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:14 pm

Jonas Gardell is basically taking the piss out of the western countries that complains about eastern countries winning the Eurovision.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20168:15 pm

Look how bad my prediction was haha. The person I’m watching with believes Wiktoria is a certain finalist as her vocal was heads and shoulders above the rest.

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:17 pm

VI HAR ETT RESULTAT!

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:18 pm

The first act straight to the final is… David Lindgren with “We are your tomorrow”

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:19 pm

Wow, my predictions for tonight went completely rogue.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20168:20 pm

Me too Matteo, though it was rather a scattergun approach to predicting this week in such a strong and varied semifinal.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20168:23 pm

I’ve just been thinking… Actually David’s got one of the best qualification records I can think of. Up there with Eric Saade, Måns Zelmerlöw and Danny Saucedo

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:24 pm

Back to the results, in Andra Chansen: Molly Pettersson Hammar and Isa!

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:25 pm

To the final: Wiktoria!

Matteo Manta
February 13, 20168:26 pm

This is the final result:
To the final: Wiktoria and David Lindgren

To Andra Chansen: Molly Pettersson Hammar and Isa
5th place: Krista Siegfrids
6th place: Victor och Natten
7th place: Patrik, Tommy och Uno.

Nathan Waddell
February 13, 20168:27 pm

What a ridiculous result, proving why melfest rules all. Great show tonight, bring on Semifinal 3 next Saturday!

Technical Lead: I am a huge pop music fan and I love Rihanna, Years & Years, Sia, Zara Larsson and Sam Smith. However, more importantly, I love Eurovision. Melodifestivalen is my favourite National Final and if things look out of place on the website, it's most definitely my fault.
