Let’s get started! The Moldovan national final is kicking off with a flashy dance performance to Loreen’s “We got the power” turning into hip hop tunes.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20165:47 pm

We are welcomed by a lady in a big red dress and a gentleman wearing a matching bow-tie.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20165:50 pm

There is a guy greeting us from the green room showing off some phrases in Swedish.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20165:55 pm

The jury is presented to us: A mix of people from the music industry including Aliona Moon who – together with the televoters – will decide the winner of tonight’s show.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20165:56 pm

And now we are treated with pictures of the beautiful city of Stockholm.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20165:59 pm

The host joked that those pictures could be from Chişinău – in 60, 80, maybe 100 years.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:02 pm

1. Valentin Uzun – Mine

A slimy guy all in white accompanied by two ladies in very little white cloth playing the trumpets. As a highlight there is fire coming out of his trumpet… It’s a fun song and performance but nothing to remember.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:06 pm

2. Maxim Zavida – La La Love

Quite different from the “La La Love” we all know so well. There is a swingy touch to this song with matching outfits in black, white, and gold. A catchy, but slightly boring song ending with Maxim on top of a platform surrounded by his girls.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:10 pm

3. Doiniţa Gherman – Irresistible

I couldn’t really listen to the song being distracted by the warrior dancers in motorcycle helmets, the singers studded leather dress, and her plateau boots. There were some folklore tunes to the song – all in all, nothing really seemed to make any sense.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:14 pm

4. Lidia Isac – Falling Stars

A boring electropop ballad by a singer who doesn’t know how to move. Or maybe she can’t, because her dress seems to keep her stiff. The wind machine and the flashing lights don’t really help the performance.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:15 pm

After a marathon of the first four songs we get time to breathe during the commercial break.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:20 pm

We get some interviews from the green room where the motorcycle warriors are standing around Doiniţa Gherman like bodyguards.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:26 pm

5. Big Flash Sound – Cand Vrei

A funky 70s trumpet sound that gets you into a feel-good mood right away – my personal highlight of the show so far.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:31 pm

6. Che-MD – Vodă E Cu Noi

A patriotic song about a medieval leader by a band who seem to come straight from the middle-ages as well, panpipes and all.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:35 pm

7. Andrei Ioniţa & Onoffrei – Lie

We witness a rapping peasant with a hat all over his face. Another guy in traditional Moldovan clothes is chanting only “Lie” again and again. In the background we can see pictures of the Moldovan landscape which are way more beautiful than this attempt of an artistic performance on stage.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:39 pm

8. Christina Pintilie – Picture Of Love

Two huge black and white boxes on stage on top of which Christina Pintilie and an acrobat are lying and kind of dancing. Of course, there are some more dancers jumping out of the boxes. The ballad itself is not doing much for me.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:41 pm

And we are getting some more interviews from the green room. I’m really grateful for these little breaks after all the action on stage.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:49 pm

9. Nadia Moşneagu – Memories

A classical Eurovision ballad by a lady in a brown mermaid dress surrounded by a starlit sky. I can hear some glasses breaking during her high-pitched outbursts. Highly dramatic. I’m not a fan at all.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:54 pm

10. Rodica şi Ivan Aculov – Stop Lying

Another highly dramatic song, the two singers are fighting and shouting at each other on stage. In the background, the dancers are shouting as well and their mouths are lit up all red. I’m overwhelmed by everything that is going on this stage tonight. But not in a positive way.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20166:57 pm

11. Emilia Russu – I Am Not The Same

I like the dancing couple in the background. Until they are rolling around on the floor and seem to fail at some moves. The ballad itself is quite horrible.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:01 pm

12. Viola – In The Name Of Love

At the sound of the first couple of notes, I thought I might like this blues song. Then, she started singing. And then, a weird on-screen-projection started. In the end, I just wanted this to stop.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:05 pm

I have never before been so happy about commercial breaks. This show is a complete rollercoaster.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:07 pm

The green room host is trying out one of the weird backpack construction from Rodica şi Ivan Aculov’s performance and then sitting down with their “Lord of the rings crew”.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:10 pm

We get some Swedish lessons in the green room. God kväll!

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:14 pm

13. DoReDos – FunnyFolk

This is a weird combination of traditional Moldovan folklore sound and electropop. Very colorful staging and a truely funny group!

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:19 pm

14. Max Fall feat. Dan Vozniuc & Malloy – Game Lover

A really nice rock’n’roll tune! Don’t know why there’s a cloth hanging from the guitar, but still this is my new favorite. Game (L)over for all the other candidates, hopefully.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:22 pm

15. Valeria Paşa – Save Love

I’m tired of ballad singers standing on platforms, especially when they are wearing white dresses and the platform is spinning. I have to admit that Valeria Paşa has a pretty strong voice, though.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:27 pm

16. Felicia Dunaf – You and Me

And there is another ballad. Luckily the last one for tonight, as this is the final act. The half naked dancers are struggling with toilet paper rolls. On the screen we see thousands of toilet paper peaces swirling around. Another visual overload.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:39 pm

So, we have seen all of tonight’s contestants! I couldn’t really bear anymore to be honest. My top favorites: Game lOver by Max Fall feat. Dan Vozniuc & Malloy and Cand Vrei by Big Flash Sound. La La Love by Maxim Zavida is also not too bad. But after having seen all those different performances tonight I really have no idea what the Moldovans will choose.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:42 pm

The televoting lines are closed!

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:45 pm

We get to listen to the Pasha Parfeny band now performing the song Tu nu vezi cerul. A reduced and relaxing performance for a change!

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20167:49 pm

Pasha Parfeny is treating us with some more songs. Moldova should just send him again.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20168:03 pm

After listening to some of his latest songs Pasha Parfeny performs his Eurovision single Lăutar from 2012 one more time. I’m finally starting to enjoy this show!

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20168:17 pm

So, after the jury voting the top three are:
1. Valeria Pasa 86
2. Christina Pintilie 74
3. Lidia Isac 67
So, apparently we are going for a ballad unfortunately… Let’s hope the televoters can turn something around.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20168:35 pm

For everyone who hasn’t seen the show from the beginning, we get to see the video of Stockholm one more time.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20168:41 pm

The top three from the televoting:
1. Lidia Isac
2. DoReDos
3. Christina Pintilie

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20168:42 pm

While waiting for the televoting and jury scores to be combined, we run through the recap of all the songs again.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20168:45 pm

And the winner is… LIDIA ISAC with “Falling Stars”!

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20168:47 pm

The Swedish ambassador comes on stage to congratulate Lidia Isac.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20168:56 pm

After congratulations from the manager of a bank sponsoring the show who was slightly struggling with his words, Lidia Isac receives a platinum credit card with 10.000 € as pocket money for Stockholm as well as a brand new tablet. After putting away all of her presents, Lidia gets to sing her winning song one more time, of course.

Sophie Haustein
February 27, 20169:02 pm

This was it. I can’t say I’m very happy with the result. Moldova could have done much better tonight. But after all we’ve seen it could also have been worse, to be honest. I doubt very much that Lidia Isac will make it to the final in Stockholm. Thank you for this interesting evening and good night!

I’m German and have been Eurovision-addicted ever since Lena won in 2010 – it’s a young love but all the more passionate! As a volunteer at the Song Contest 2015 in Vienna I got connected to the escXtra team. I’m scared of the day that Ralph Siegel will win again.
