Tonight another Balkan nation selects its entry and artist for Stockholm. Ten acts are in contention to represent Slovenia and pack their bags for Eurovision in May. The show broadcasted on the Slovenian national television station TV SLO 1 will start at 20:00 CET.

For another year Slovenia are using the popular EMA festival and amongst the line-up we can see some familiar names. These include Regina and Nuša Derenda. We will have to wait in order to see if another past Eurovision hopeful will make it again to Europe’s favourite show.

Note that there will be two rounds of voting. In the first round, a panel of judges will select the two entries who will qualify to the super final. Then it’s up to the Slovenian public to choose their artist for Stockholm.

The line-up for tonight

The host is announcing the jury members; amongst them Darja Svajger who represented Slovenia in 1995 & 1999.

And so it begins…

Song no. 1 Anja BašWhat If

Anja is singing a moving ballad with the guitar sound highly recognizable. The bridge of the song is not that strong. The female dancer is quite distracting though in the end they both unite. I’ll be surprised if this one goes to the super final!

The jury members are commenting on Anja’s song. Though I don’t understand a word in Slovenian, I can see that they liked her outfit.

Song no. 2 Žan Serčič – Summer Story

A bit of fresh air… a joyful and indeed a positive summer story. The young Žan Serčič is projecting a happy song. The intro of the song reminds me of Gianluca’s Tomorrow. The lead singer makes sure that the viewers don’t forget the song title as the name got tattooed on his arms.

Song no. 3 Anja Kotar – Too Cool

We have the second Anja in the selection. Anja Kotar is indeed cool. She sings this jazzy uptempo song with great confidence. She looks young and her vocals are top notch. Being alone should work in her favour as all the attention is on her performance. Well done… this is the best so far!

After a short break we’re back for song 4

Song no. 4 San Di Ego Band – Brez Tebe

The first song performed in their native language. San Di Ego band is singing a rock ballad song. The lead singer is doing a lot of effort though it’s definitely taste, however there’s always a place for a rock song in Eurovision.

Song no. 5 D Base – Spet Živ

We’re halfway through. D Base are singing a Slovenian rap song and the tune is quite catchy. They moved around and connected well with the steadicam. Curious to hear this song in English!

Song no. 6 Regina – Alive In Every Way

Regina is trying her luck again and she is singing a well rehearsed Eurovisiony song. The refrain is not that catchy and a bit repetitive. At the climax (if you can call it a climax) she is joined by four dancers. Can’t see this one going far!

Song no. 7 ManuElla – Blue And Red

ManuElla is clad in a white look a like military jacket. Her vocals are good and the song is just average. In the end is takes of her military jacket and is clad in a short red shiny dress. The backing vocals give an extra impetus to this flat song.

A short break and soon we’re for song 8

Edward Montebello
February 27, 20167:59 pm

Song no. 8 Raiven – Črno Bel

Raiven is alone on stage but she clearly depicts the main strong message behind this song. The string arrangement is great. The director shows a pre-recorded footage of Raiven playing the harp. This is a song that you either love it or hate it. I like it!

Song no. 9 Nuša Derenda – Tip Top

It’s time for Nuša Derenda. There was such great hype on her and maybe this time she finally can make it two in Eurovision. Yes this is the strongest entry so far though you can recall a James Bond tune. Nuša’s vocals are excellent and the choreographic dance is well rehearsed! She can pack her bags for Stockholm!

Song no. 10 Sebastijan Lukovnjak – Tales Of Tomorrow

The last act is presented by Sebastijan and he is singing a pop country catchy tune. The background lightning looks good on tv. He can be more charismatic on camera but he transmits positive energy. His vocals are strong and considering this is performing last it’s quite memorable. Should make it to the super final!

Time for ManuElla singing again her song Blue And Red. There is more energy now but still not convinced that this is the best song for Slovenia.

Edward Montebello
February 27, 20168:37 pm

Raiven is the second and last super finalist to go on stage. For some reason she reminds me of Gracia (Germany 2005). May be her moves are similar!
