RUV (Iceland’s broadcaster) has confirmed that it will definitely be participating in next year’s competition which is taking place in Tel Aviv.
“The decision is based on the fact that it is not a political event”
Earlier this year, Iceland’s participation in Israel was put in jeopardy when a petition was put into place to boycott Iceland participating in Eurovision in Israel. According to the signatories, it was “morally indefensible to participate in a a glossy glamor-event like Eurovision which takes place in the shadow of Israeli violence against its neighbors.“
However, Skarphéðinn Guðmundsson (Program Director for RUV) has said that participating in the contest is about peace and uniting people”
The decision is based on the fact that it is not a political event, however it is a gathering of different nations, which from the beginning has been the main purpose and aim to spread out the power of unity and peace through contemporary music and culture in general.Skarphéðinn Guðmundsson on participating in Eurovision 2019
