This morning (12th August), the host broadcaster of the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest – BBC has announced the shortlist of cities.
These will enter the first stage of the two stage bidding process that the BBC earlier stated they will use to select the host city. These shortlisted cities will be narrowed down to two in the second stage. Subsequently one will prevail and take over hosting duties from the 2022 host city – Turin, Italy.
Runners and riders
On BBC Radio 2’s Zoe Ball Breakfast Show and BBC Breakfast on BBC One the shortlist of cities were announced. These are as follows:-
- Birmingham
- Glasgow
- Leeds
- Liverpool
- Manchester
- Newcastle
- Sheffield
As previously stated these will be narrowed down to two, the announcement will come at a later date. But rest assured we will bring you the news when it breaks.
What to expect from Eurovision 2023
The first important information is that Ukraine will automatically qualify to the Grand Final. The UK will also qualify as a member of the Big Five. We shall thus return to a Final night with 26 countries competing for the win.
The shows will be organized by the BBC, but Ukraine’s UA:PBC will send representatives to help the British hosts “develop Ukrainian elements” in the production of the contest. The statement already announces that the logo (which has not yet been revealed) will reflect the special and unique circumstances behind this special hosting. It is indeed the first time since 1980 that the contest will be held outside the winning country.
