Rotterdam 2021

183 million viewers watched the Eurovision Song Contest 2021

Eurovision.tv has shared the official viewing figures from Eurovision 2021, which took place in Rotterdam almost 2 weeks ago. The biggest music event in the world has always had impressive viewing figures of approximately 180 million annually, and this year was no exception: 183 million people from all over the world watched the 3 shows and saw Italy’s Måneskin win the contest on 22 May.

Online interest from younger audiences

After not having an official Eurovision Song Contest in 2020, many people tuned in to catch this year’s contest. Eurovision.tv has revealed that the Grand Final had a 4 percentage point higher TV audience share compared to the 2019 contest, which had 40.5%. The audience that was most interested in watching the contest consisted of 15-24 year olds, of whom 52.8% tuned in to the contest while watching TV at that time.

A reason for this increased interest from younger people is the success of Eurovision’s online presence during this season. 50.6 million people followed the show on the official YouTube channel, most of whom were 18-34 years old. Furthermore, the official Eurovision social media accounts gathered large engagement of approximately 14 million actions on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok.

Increased viewing figures from many countries

It comes as no surprise that Iceland is once again at the top of the list of the viewing share of any market: 99.9% of the Icelandic population tuned in to Eurovision if they were watching TV at the time. Certainly, they must have been happy to see Daði og Gagnamagnið get 4th place in the Grand Final with “10 Years.” Another country that largely increased its viewing figures was Finland, who had missed out on the final in 2019, but received a 6th place in 2020 with Blind Channel and their song “Dark Side.” With 1.4 million viewers, Eurovision accounted for 81.4% of the TV viewing in the country.

Other notable viewing figures come from the Big 5 and host country. Starting with the latter, The Netherlands had its biggest TV audience for the Grand Final in history. 78.5% of TV viewers (a total of 5.4 million) watched the contest as it was hosted in their home country. This is 21% more than the number of viewers who saw Duncan Laurence win! The two Big 5 countries that got their best result in a long time, also had a large increase in viewers: in winning country Italy, 4.3 million people watched the Grand Final, the largest audience since their return in 2011. In runner-up country France, 5.5 million people tuned in to see Barbara Pravi’s “Voilá” get second place. This was a 15% increase compared to 2019!

Executive Supervisor Martin Österdahl says that “the Eurovision Song Contest’s impact is bigger than ever,” referring to both the overwhelming viewing figures as well as the commercial success of many of this year’s songs.
