Eurovision stars win awards as Kalush Orchestra and Sam Ryder feature at 2022 MTV EMAs

Noa Kirel, Amir and Pinguini Tattici Nucleari sweep regional awards!

Last night the annual MTV Europe Music Awards took place in Düsseldorf, Germany. During a Eurovision stacked night, 2022 winners, Kalush Orchestra took centre stage as runner-up Sam Ryder presented an award. Meanwhile more Eurovision stars, including Noa Kirel, Amir and Pinguini Tattici Nucleari won in the regional categories of the MTV EMAs 2022.

Kalush Orchestra

With their distinctive pink bucket hats, Eurovision 2022 winners, Kalush Orchestra created one of the defining moments of the evening. Bringing the show to a close, combining music and Ukrainian cultural symbolism in a powerful statement of defiance against the ongoing invasion of their home country.

Before the show, the bands’ lead singer gave his view on the performance and what it would mean to have the next Eurovision host city, Liverpool, honour the victory that Kyiv were not able to host themselves.

We are very grateful to the UK for helping to deal with this situation. And of course we hope the UK can integrate some details of our culture – something that is important for Ukraine because we did our best last year. This year our country will make the best artists, the best music, to win one more time. So when we win the war, Eurovision 2023 could be in Kyiv.

Sam Ryder presents ‘Best Collaboration’

The happiest ‘Space Man’ to ever finish runner-up took a break from performing, to test out his presenting skills instead. In between chatting to new best pal, Taylor Swift and presumably making her the most famous fan of Eurovision yet, Sam Ryder gave out the award for ‘Best Collaboration’ with Lauren Spencer-Smith. Amongst a competitive category, David Guetta and Bebe Rexha came out on top with their hit, ‘I’m Good (Blue)’. Of course David knows Sam well from their recent collaboration on, ‘Living Without You’ with Sigala.

More Eurovision artists win regional awards

Elsewhere it was another successful night for Eurovision stars from across Europe in the regional categories. These awards celebrate the best local artists from each territory. Over in Israel, the first act to be announced for the Liverpool contest took home the award for ‘Best Israeli Act’. Since 2017, Noa Kirel has won this award on five occasions. Could this be an indicator of Eurovision success to come?

Meanwhile the ever popular French star of Eurovision 2016, Amir won the award for ‘Best French Act’. Thus making it the third time Amir has won this award. Recently the French crooner re-issued his latest album, R3SOURCES to include updated versions of his classic hits. Over the weekend he released the new version of, ‘Sors de ma tête’.

Over in Italy, it was Pinguini Tattici Nucleari who saw off tough competition from fellow Sanremo protagonists, Elodie, Blanco and Eurovision 2021 winners, Måneskin to win the award for ‘Best Italian Act’. Hotly rumoured to be among the names soon to be announced for Sanremo 2023, the band first came to prominence in the 2020 edition with, ‘Ringo Starr’ finishing in third place behind Francesco Gabbani and Diodato.
