For the sixth consecutive year Estonia is using the popular Eesti Laul format to select its entry to the Eurovision Song Contest. With only a few days until the first semi-final, we took the chance to catch up with some of the singers taking part and today we speak to Brigita Murutar.
escXtra: Hello Brigita, thanks for taking some to speak to us today! Firstly we’d like to congratulate you on your qualification to the semi-finals of Eesti Laul 2014!
Brigita Murutar: Thanks!
X: Firstly, can you introduce yourself and tell us something about yourself?
B: My name is Brigita Murutar. I am a 17 year old student in Tartu, studying in a medicine class. I have a dog and a horse.
X: Where were you and how did you feel when you found out that you were one of the singers who had made it to the Semi-Finals of Eesti Laul?
B: At that very moment I was with my manager Rainer. A minute before I had been singing in a church, when he called and told me that he wants to talk to me. I felt weird because it was 7 pm and we usually dont meet in the evenings, I started getting suspicious and thought that maybe, just maybe, but naah, that could not be. And when I got into the car, then he was like, hurry up, we have to get to my place, to see the TV, but we missed the show, where they made the happy semi-finalists.
X: How did you come together with the team behind the song and was the song always intended for Eesti Laul?
B: Rainer Michelson from the band Supernova contacted me. He is the singer and songwriter of the band. He offered me an oppurtunity to do one song together and if it turns out to be a successful project, we continue working together , recording new songs and giving concerts. At the very beginning, he also told me about the plan to participate in the contest Eesti Laul. The song was already written a long time ago, waiting for the “right time”. Feliks Kütt has written the text for the song. Rainer and Feliks have done different projects together before, so it is a “tested” cooperation. Rainer also found other members for the band (and it is a cool group we have 🙂 😉
X: Could you tell us a little about the song? What does the title mean?
B: This song is very positive, the title ¨Laule täis taevakaar¨, meaning ¨The world is full of songs¨, speaks for it self.
X: Eesti Laul has developed in recent years to be much more than just a Eurovision preselection and in this year’s contest you will be up against many big names in the Estonian music industry as well as several strong newcomers. For you, what does it mean to participate in Eesti Laul?
B: As you mentioned, there are many newcomers, well, I am one of them. It gives me huge experience and maybe a chance to make an entrance to the music, as you said, industry.
X: What are your feelings on the fact that if you win you will be representing your nation at Eurovision in Copenhagen in May?
B: I dont think too far, I live day-by-day and right now I am concentrating on the semi-final, but sure, It would be the biggest day of my life to represent Estonia in Eurovision.
X: Are you a Eurovision fan?
B: Of course I like Eurovision, it is kind of a tradition to watch it every year, with my family. I has been one of my biggest dreams to perform in Eurovision, on a big stage, in front of the world.
X: Now some questions to get to know a little better, how did you spend your Christmas and New Year?
B: Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year and I have always spent it with my entire family. New year I welcomed with my dear friends!
X: Where is your favourite place in Estonia and/or where would you recommend someone visiting Estonia go see?
B: I have my own favorite little places, that nobody knows, but I would definitely recommend visiting Saaremaa (it is the biggest island in Estonia) and the places around Võrtsjärv (it is a big lake in the middle of Estonia).
X: What is your favourite food to cook?
B: I don’t cook, seriously, I am a disaster in kitchen.
X: If you could have any animal in the world as a pet, what would you choose?
B: Unicorn or lion maybe, but not them together.
X: What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?
B: That is a secret 🙂
X: Finally, do you have a message for our readers?
B: Music is all around us, all you have to do is listen!
