Santiano: “Rock on and Zack ahoi!” [Interview]

The last of the Big Five will pick their entry this week: Germany! escXtra.com spoke to one of the favourites to win the competition this Thursday. They’ll try their luck with a combination of shanties, Irish folk and rock music: Santiano! Read what Pete Sage had to say below!
escXtra.com: First of all, thank you for taking the time to speak to us! How does it feel to be one of the first seven acts for Unser Song für Dänemark?
Pete Sage:  It feels absolutely amazing and privileged to be part of this contest.
X: Could you introduce us to your group?
P: They are sleeping right now… don’t worry, the Santianos are here:
Andreas Fahnert – guitar
Axel Stosberg – percussion
Peter David Sage – violin
Hans-Timm Hinrichsen – guitar
Björn Both – guitar
X:  Eurovision.de described you as ‘Shanty rockers’. Would you agree with this term or would you use different words to describe your style?
P: Up to now everybody has tried many variations but we haven’t found/heard a suggestions of: „That’s it!“. You just can’t describe it in one or two words.
X: Why did you decide to apply for Unser Song für Dänemark?
P: Because we are confident for the international market. We feel that this sound/style could be accepted in other markets.
X: Your songs will be called ‘Niemals Untergehen’ and ‘Fiddler on the Deck’. Could you tell us a little about these songs? Will it be in the style we know from you or will it be completely different?
P:’Niemals Untergehen’: This is just a statement in the musical style of „Wir sind uns treu“! – “We are true to ourselves!”
‘Fiddler On The Deck’: This is a song in celtic style imbedded in the typical Santiano sound.
X: The titles suggest you’re going to be singing in German and in English. Which language do you normally prefer to sing in?
P: English.
X: Can you give us a little hint on what you’re planning to do with the performance in Cologne?
P: No! Because we don’t know yet. It will be massive.
X: You’re one of the bigger names on stage in Cologne for the national final. Does this put a lot of pressure on you?
P: We try to ignore it.
X:  Are you guys Eurovision fans? Do you watch the contest every year?
P: Well, we like it…
X: Do you have a favourite Eurovision song?
P: Sure! The Fiddle On The Deck! 🙂
X: Finally, do you have a message for the readers of escXtra.com?
P: Yes, Rock on and Zack ahoi!
escXtra.com would like to thank Pete Sage for his answers. We’d also like to wish Santiano the best of luck in Thursday’s German national final, Unser Song für Dänemark!
