Bori Magyar: “I classify myself as a world music singer.” [Interview]

In the weeks before A Dal 2015, we speak to the participants who are hoping to represent Hungary in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015. Today, we once again speak to a newcomer: Bori Magyar! Read what she had to say below!
escXtra.com: First of all, thank you very much Bori for accepting this interview. We are very excited to know more about you and your song. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your musical background?
Bori Magyar:  I was born in Budapest, Hungary. I began singing at the age of nine, and attended high schools for music in Gödöllõ and Vác. I also plays the clarinet, the piano and the guitar. I made my debut as a singer in 2003 with the Gödöllõ Young Artists, where I acted in musicals and rock operas, and performed at local events. I became a professional singer with Besh o droM, a Hungarian world music band. Ever since, my main musical profile is a fusion between traditional folk music and other genres, including pop, rock and jazz. I classify myself as a world music singer.
X: What is the story and the inspiration behind your song “Lead Me To Heaven”?
B: The songwriter Tamás Váradi and Me have a mutual friend Tamás Viski who was playing with me in the Analog Cuvee band. They were friend from their childhood, and work together. Suddenly Our friend was gone, and then Tamás wrote this song, he believed, that he had to continue what they started to do together. So he called me and then when we first met, I knew this song is a really honest song with abeautiful melody, and I thought this song is what the people are going to really like.
X: How frequently do you watch the ESC? Are you a fan?
B: When I was a child we were watching with my family year by year it was one of our favorite program in tv 🙂 now I am living alone, and I don’t have tv, but I follow the ESC on youtube and in the news. And also one of the oldest band ABBA from the ESC is one of my favorite bands. I was 5 when I started to listening them and I’m a fan from that time 🙂
X: What is your favourite ESC song of all time and your favourite Hungarian song in the Contest? Why?
B: I have got 2 favourite songs: Yohanna: Is it true so beautiful, so honest singing like an angel. Loreen: Euphoria I never heard a song so powerful like this. In Hungary: Compact disco: Sound of our hearts wemade a cover of this song with the Analog Cuvee band it’s just so good to sing this song! I like the lyric. Kati Wolf: What about my dreams same as the Loreen song to me. She is really cool!
X: Why would you like to represent your country in the ESC?
B: It is such a good feeling to represent your country! Just like in the sport. The entire country supports you, and you know, you do it for them. so I get so many energy and it gives me wings and I feel I can fly and sing like I never did before for my country. It just makes me proud.
X: What are your expectations about doing A Dal?
B: I would like to show myself to the country, to singing more and more people. I hope they gonna like what I am doing 🙂
X: The style of Lead Me To Heaven is very modern and upbeat, which is different from your previous work. Is this a new direction in your career?
B: Maybe 🙂 In my solo career I would like to make some song like this, you know to try myself in other styles. But I think, it’s gonna be a side project, I would like to stay in my main profile, because the world music is the best to me.
X: We know you have sung in many languages: Hungarian, English and even in Spanish (with Uruguayan musician Iván Tabeira). Do you feel English improves your chances to win A Dal and have a good result in the ESC?
B: I don’t know. I think sometimes you don’t have to speak the langue to understand the lyric and feel what about the song. I’ve got many experience of this. So many times I was singing the hungarian folk songs, and I could express the song. I saw, the people felt it.
X: What are your plans after A Dal?
B: To work on my solo project.
X: Do you have a message for our readers all over the world?
B: Listening music because the music can cure wound and dry tears, and make smile on everybody face. Just listening music anytime when you can.
