06 – 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan: Sona Azizova – One Of Those Days

Sean (12)

Choosing a winner this year was pretty tough, and it was a three horse race to see which song would be my favourite in the end. But while I began to tire with some of the songs I was binging, “One of Those Days” is a song that I could listen to on repeat for hours and not get tired of listening to. I’ll admit, it isn’t the most innovative song, and if it weren’t for the Azeri lyrics, this song could be reasonably sent by any country. But the beauty of this song is in its simplicity. It’s not trying to do too much, and what it does, it does beautifully. There’s amazing vocals from Sona and the backing singers, and the instrumentation is simple, but timeless. The Azeri language is also a welcome addition. Overall, it’s a classy entry that is able to perfect common ballad tropes without coming off as cheesy or dated. Depending on the live performance, this could do really well, especially with the jury.

A very classy, grown up entry from Azerbaijan. The song is beautiful in it’s simplicity. Sara’s vocals are solid, the presentation tasteful and the English lyrics are put in all the right places next to the Azeri. You can’t help but remember the chorus. The public may drift away from this one but I’m sure the jury will appreciate the quality here.

05 – 🇵🇱 Poland: Sara James – Somebody

Ryan (12)

Once again, Poland have smashed it out of the park courtesy of a great song and fantastic vocal delivery from Sara James. It is a mature song that still feels age appropriate and it is easy to imagine the confetti falling onto the stage after it is crowned victorious. For me this is the one to beat this year and Sara James is destined to be a future star.

Isabella (10)

In “Somebody”, Sara’s vocals are well beyond her years and the rich tone she is able to achieve is a testament to her musical family and success in Polish music competitions, including winning The Voice Kids. Not discrediting her own ability, the song itself gives her the perfect chance to showcase her range and style, which will definitely appeal to juries as well as the public. “Somebody” song starts off slow and emotional, but we can appreciate its depth as it gradually moves into an empowering and uptempo pop ballad. If the live performance proves to be as magical and transportive as the music video and studio version, Poland could be gunning for their second victory in three years.

04 – 🇲🇰 North Macedonia: Dajte Muzika – Green Force

Justas (10)

Seems like North Macedonia is back to it’s 2007-2008 JESC levels and we are living for it. ‘Green Force’ is a perfect combination of pop music and ethnic bop with a clear and important message. In this song and music video I can actually feel the angryness of those kids that their planet, in which they will be living for many years to come, is dying. Theyr vocals sound very well together and with a good staging North Macedonia is set to achieve their best result in ANY Eurovision contests.

Dominik (8)

I’m in love with this one. I did not expect something like this at all. It sounds modern and professional and the kids already look like pros in the music video. I can not wait to see what they bring on the stage but this song is on repeat! Moreover, I also look forward to them entering ESC in some years because they are so talented and would absolutely get many points there!

03 – 🇮🇹 Italy: Elisabetta Lizza – Specchio

Maria (12)

Seems like Italy is going to win everything this year and I am absolutely up for it! Also very pleasant to see Italy going for a rock entry for JESC this year, it sounds marvelous in my opinion. The song itself is great, Elisabetta got nice vocal skills for it and I hope the staging will be impressive enough for such an entry.

Tom O (7)

Great of Italy to follow their win at Eurovision 2021 with another rock entry for Junior. With Junior typically featuring cute pop or ballads this is a refreshing change. For me it takes the first minute to get into it’s stride but once there it’s a great little song. There’s some potential here for some interesting staging with the dancers, masks and mirrors shown in the music video. It’ll be interesting to see where this places on the scoreboard.
