María Ólafsdóttir: “I would sing in English.” [Interview]

With Söngvakeppni’s second semifinal taking place tonight, escXtra.com spoke to María Ólafsdóttir, who will be competing with her song Lítil Skref tonight. Read what she had to say below!
escXtra.com: Hey María! Thanks for doing this interview. How are you preparing for Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2015?
María Ólafsdóttir: Well I have already recorded the song and now we are working on the stage performance! It´s all looking good and I am so excited 😀
X: Could you introduce yourself?
M: Yes of course! I am 21 years old from Iceland and I have been singing since I was just a baby and I have released few songs but now I am going to focus more on the music. I have been acting in the theaters here in Iceland for example in Sound of Music, Michael Jackson show, Annie, Lion King and right now I am Ronja the Robber’s daughter. I am also a dancer and have been dancing since I was 5 years old. So yeah that’s me 🙂
X: Who are your musical idols?
M: Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Carrie Underwood are my idols!
X: Why did you decide to apply for Söngvakeppnin 2015?
M: When Stopwaitgo asked me if I wanted to sing this song for Söngvakeppnin there was no doubt in my mind. I loved this song from the moment I heard it. The melody and the lyrics are so beautiful and it’s just perfect for my voice.
X: What can you tell us about your song Lítil Skref?
M: It is a power ballad and in English it means ,,Small steps”.  It’s about a girl going through a break-up and she is singing about that she won´t let this break her down. She is a fighter.
X: If you’d win Söngvakeppnin, would you sing in English or Icelandic in Eurovision?
M: I would sing in English. The lyrics have already been written in English and I think it is important that people can understand and connect with the story in the song.
X: What’s your favourite place in Iceland?
M: I think it’s Akureyri!
X: Do you watch Eurovision every year?
M: Yes of course! I’m a big Eurovision fan 😀 I can’t miss a thing!
X: Do you have an all time favourite Eurovision song?
M: I have so many favourites but when I think of Eurovision I think of  the Icelandic song ,,All out of luck” by Selma Björnsdóttir or ,,Euphoria” from Sweden 🙂
X: Finally, do you have a message for the readers of escXtra.com?
M: Happy Eurovision!!
escXtra.com would like to thank María for her time and we’d like to wish her the best of luck in tonight’s semifinal of Söngvakeppni 2015! Watch her song Lítil Skref below!
