Nick's Eurovision winners: 1997-2016

Kyiv 2005: NOX – Forogj, Világ! (Hungary)

The mid-00s are often seen as a time for ethnic flavoured pop songs: Turkey originally winning in 2003, Ukraine winning in 2004 and that was followed by a Greek 2005 victory. No matter how much I love Paparizou, her entry was a little too calculated for me.
Instead, it’s finally time for one of my favourite Eurovision countries to shine through. They withdrew after 1998 and returned with a bang: Hungary. This absolutely fits the bill of ethnic entries, but unlike Turkey 2003 and Greece 2005, it comes across as genuine and honest. As if we’re properly in the middle of a Hungarian country town, where the local group is performing this. I’m loving this from start to finish.
Please, bring us to Budapest soon. Anyway, for now it’s Budapest 2006.

I'm one of the founding members of ESCXTRA.com. Eleven years after the start, I'm proud to say that I am now the Editor-in-Chief of this wonderful website. When I'm not doing Eurovision stuff, you should be able to find me teaching German to kids... And cheering on everything and everyone Greek, pretty much. Pame Ellada!
