Melodifestivalen 2017: First possible act confirmed

Although the official submissions for Melodifestivalen 2017 won’t open for a few more days, the first possible act for Sweden’s national selection has already been confirmed.
Since 2012, Svensktoppen Nästa – a radio-based nationwide talent show with the aim to discover new artists – has had a wild card offered to one of its finalists which gives a completely unknown act the chance to perform on the biggest tv show in Sweden. While they rarely make a dent in the results (Terese Fredenwall and SMILO placed 5th in their heats in 2012 and 2016 respectively), it’s a great opportunity to get their name out there and launch their careers in front of 3 million viewers.
After a thrilling final earlier today, Les Gordons were offered the wild card for next year’s Melodifestivalen through a jury vote. When asked if they accepted the wild card, they answered that “they needed to think about it”, although it’s unknown whether the response was serious or made in jest. The song they entered Svensktoppen Nästa with,  “Need to feel”, won’t be eligible to compete next year due to the September 1st cutoff date imposed by the EBU – so while we might have the first name of the Melodifestivalen season, the actual song will remain under wraps until the 6 week long selection kicks off in February 2017.
