Bulgarian national broadcaster BNT has confirmed that Bulgaria have submitted the paperwork required to participate in the forthcoming 2017 Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv. However, they have stated that they are still awaiting approval from the board at BNT before they can finalise their participation. Countries have until October 10th to withdraw from the contest without facing a penalty.
Bulgaria have gained somewhat of an “all or nothing” reputation in Eurovision, finishing in the top 5 on both of their appearances in Eurovision finals – in 2007 with Elitsa & Stoyan and in 2016 with Poli Genova. However, the nation has failed to make the final 8 times which includes 6 consecutive non-qualifications from 2008 to 2013 before the country withdrew from the contest in 2014 due to financial problems. They returned to the contest this year, following recent success in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest which included hosting the 2015 contest in Sofia, where Poli’s If Love Was A Crime gave Bulgaria a record-breaking 4th place finish.
