In a break from recent tradition, Azerbaijan have already announced who will be their representative for the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. National broadcaster İctimai TV revealed earlier today that the lucky artist is Diana Hajiyeva. Diana, who sometimes uses DiHaj as her artist name, is based in the Azerbaijani capital city Baku. Nevertheless, İctimai TV have yet to reveal any details about the song Diana will sing in Kyiv.
More about Diana…
Diana isn’t a stranger to the Eurovision world. She participated in Milli Seçim Turu ahead of the 2011 contest, finishing in 4th place in heat 6. Her heat contained not only the eventual Milli Seçim Turu winner, but eventual Eurovision winner Eldar Gasimov. Diana’s style of music is described as “experimental pop”. An early announcement for Azerbaijan
This is the third consecutive year that İctimai TV has chosen to select the Azerbaijani Eurovision entry internally. However, in previous years the broadcaster chose to keep details under wraps until the very last minute. Both Elnur Huseynov and Samra were not revealed as the 2015 and 2016 Azerbaijani representatives until the very last week before the deadline for Eurovision entries to be selected. Perhaps this is a move to drum up extra hype; Azerbaijan haven’t finished in the top 10 since 2013. Nevertheless, the country still maintains its 100% qualification record. Only Australia, Romania, Russia and Ukraine share such success.
