Esma Redžepova, one half of the duo who represented Macedonia back in 2013, has sadly passed away. The news broke earlier this morning and the cause of death remains unknown.
Often called the queen of Roma music, Esma was one of the country’s biggest stars, and she was awarded the prestigious title National Artist of the Republic of Macedonia in 2013. Her career started in the 1950s and she released 24 albums over the course of 50+ years. Beyond music, she also dabbled in film, and received a lot of praise for her humanitarian work. Amongst other things, she and her late husband fostered 47 children and she worked extensively for women’s rights in Macedonia and the Roma community.
