The Xtra Files: We Review Moldova’s ‘Hey, Mamma!’ by SunStroke Project!

Welcome to The Xtra Files, our new series which will give you an insight into what the team at escXtra think of your favourite entries into this year’s contest! Today, we review Moldova.

Now that all the songs have been released, we are able to review each and every one of them. Our honest and brutal reviews will keep you entertained until the rehearsals start in May! We will also each give a score out of 10 for every entry, and create an escXtra leaderboard of the entries!
The series begins today, with reviews of the Moldovan entry, ‘Hey, Mamma!’ by SunStroke Project, from Dimitris, Katarina, Luke, Nick, Rodrigo, and Wivian. Let’s get started!

The Reviews

Dimitris:

I have to admit that the song has a catchy sound. However it does not appeal to me as much as their 2010 entry does. I feel like there’s something missing from the song (beside Olia Tira’s vocals). The music video does not make it any better either.

Katarina:

One of my favourite Moldovan acts is back, but sadly with a much weaker song than in 2010. I love the fun factor of having Epic Sax Guy in the contest again and the chorus is insanely catchy, but I feel like the song is missing something, and I just can’t put my finger on what it is. However, I would still love to see such an uplifting entry in the final.

Luke:

Oh Moldova, mamma should be proud! The man, the myth, the legend, Epic Sax Guy has returned, and he’s brought 2 other guys along with him for some reason. The song is catchy, completely stands out from all the other entries, and gives Moldova its best chance to do well in years! I’m mostly excited to see Epic Sax Guy hump a saxophone in front of 200 million people again.

Nick:

Epic Sax Guy back with an epic entry. It’s bittersweet that Eurovision’s most famous moment is not known for being from Eurovision, but hey. Lyrically, this is a mess. But it is a tune, people. This is what Eurovision needs and this is what Moldova needed. And sometimes, it’s what I need too.

Rodrigo:

Poised to be the biggest hot mess of the year, a guilty pleasure that gives me a weird sense of happiness and intense desire to party. Oh, and welcome back Epic Sax Guy!

Wivian:

I was gonna tear this entry to shreds, but I can’t even find the will to be mean about this…it’s just blah. Even though I didn’t find their 2010 entry good or fun either, at least that one had something resembling a melody…I’ll give them 1/10 just because of the ridiculous flower bouquet microphones.

I've watched Eurovision for as long as I can remember, but my interest really built in 2008, after I decided to watch the semifinals online, out of boredom, before the final...I was blown away by the quality of the show and have been hooked ever since! I'm a competitive trampolinist and I love baking. I've also just completed a master's degree in Research Methods in Psychology at University College London.
