Welcome to The Xtra Files, our new series which will give you an insight into what the team at escXtra think of your favourite entries into this year’s contest! Today, we review Belarus.
Now that all the songs have been released, we are able to review each and every one of them. Our honest and brutal reviews will keep you entertained until the rehearsals start in May! We will also each give a score out of 10 for every entry, and create an escXtra leaderboard of the entries! You can see our preview reviews here.
Today, it is the turn of the Belarussian entry, ‘Story of My Life’ by Navi, to be reviewed by Hlynur, Luke, Nick, Rodrigo, Sophie, and Yassia. Let’s get started!
The Reviews
Hlynur
There are so many nice things about this song like that they’re singing in their own language. It’s cheerful and makes you feel cozy. But this “I” and “hey” in the end makes you almost forget that you liked the song in the beginning.
Luke
This song is the happiest song of this year by far, and I absolutely LOVE happy songs! To paraphrase Phoebe from Friends, Navi are like Santa Claus on prozac, in Disneyland, getting laid. You just can’t help but join in with the “Hey! Hey!” and start dancing along!
Nick
What on earth?! Belarus are picking an entry which is very Belarussian and not cheap? Without an ounce of English or a single scandal? World upside down right there, but it’s an effort well done. I really hope Belarus will be rewarded for sending this. They deserve it. Send something genuine and catchy, get a good result.
Rodrigo
I like its authenticity, but somehow every time I listen to it I can help but feeling that it goes on for a minute too long. It will probably stand out because of national language and how strangely happy they seem on stage, but it shouldn’t qualify for the final. It probably will, nevertheless.
Sophie
This is catchy, light-hearted, and most importantly genuine. I love the fact that they are singing in their native language. And I have to admit that I’m very surprised to be loving a Belarussian entry, but I AM loving this!
Yassia
A very happy and cheerful song that makes me sing and dance together with the guys. I think the audience is going to love it too. It’s also cool they sing it in Belarussian. Good choice this year, Belarus!
