We previously reported that Sacha-Jean Baptiste would be the designer for Georgia’s performance at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The Bulgarian delegation have just confirmed that she will also be the artistic director for Kristian Kostov’s performance!
Music and vocals are just two parts of a Eurovision performance – the visual performance is also extremely important! The Bulgarian delegation understand this, which is why they have demanded only the best for both their video clip and their staging. This is also why they have selected Baptiste to be their artistic director.
Who is she?
Sacha-Jean Baptiste is one of the most renowned Swedish choreographers, with experience in both Eurovision and Melodifestivalen, as well as superstars such as Zara Larsson. She has also worked with the Swedish Idol and X Factor series.
In an interview with eurovision.bg, when asked about her past projects, she said:
“I’m proud of all my babies! For the live stage, I’ve had the chance to show direct Zara Larsson’s tour, and she is an inspiring artist to work with and one of our biggest pop stars today. That means the engine runs fast on that level, so your work gets to travel a lot. I also LOVE Eurovision! The freedom and excitement to create performances for Eurovision is a magic feeling, and it is something very special to get the opportunity to work with an artist that has the honour to represent his/hers country. It gives my work responsibility and direction I like!”
What does she think of Kristian Kostov?
Baptiste is very excited and positive about working with Kostov! Her first impression of him was that he is a “happy, excited young artist”. He also has a lot of pride and a “willingness to work hard”:
“I can tell that Kristian is very used to working with his stage presence and has a good understanding of how to create dynamic energy to match the song’s power.”
When asked about what inspires her whilst designing the Bulgarian performance, Baptiste says:
“The song has clean but also poetic vibe. It’s not only a good and strong pop song, but it’s mesmerising because it gives you that modern feel to it that is now and tomorrow. I like contemporary modern styles in any way, and my work always gravitates towards that. I like the clean look and the artist’s eyes. Some of my most celebrated work has been when I can find that clean, simple energy the artist has and to build a concept around it. I’m sure we’re going to succeed with our entry this year, and I’m really excited to see it in action on stage!”
Kristian Kostov will perform his song ‘Beautiful Mess’ in the first semi-final on the 9th May. He is at second place in the odds!
