ESCXTRA: Live from Kyiv

Day 2: Svala completes first rehearsal for Iceland – REVIEW

escXtra are live from Kyiv for day two of rehearsals ahead of the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest! The countries rehearsing today, in chronological order, are Greece, Poland, Moldova, Iceland, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Armenia, Slovenia and Latvia. Furthermore, read our handy guide for a more detailed look at this contest’s rehearsal schedule.

In addition, for our immediate reactions to every single rehearsal, you can follow our live stream from the press centre at the International Exhibition Center by visiting our YouTube channel.

The latest artist to rehearse is Svala from Iceland. We have just watched their first run through of Paper live on screen and here is our initial reaction.

Summary in a sentence

Svala’s staging seems more inviting than it did in the national final although this still feels slightly underwhelming to me.

Staging

Svala’s LED backdrop consists of striking bold, white, sharp lines and shapes. She is alone on stage. During the middle 8, the arena turns dark and strobe lighting is used to create the atmosphere.

Vocals

Svala’s vocals were great and the backing vocal sounded good in the mix.

Costumes

Svala is dressed in a white costume with a floor-length transparent cape. Furthermore, her hair is tied up into two buns. Overall, her image seems to have been softened since the Icelandic national final.

Watch the rehearsal!

Stay tuned for our reaction to Martina Bárta as she rehearses My Turn next for Czech Republic. Meanwhile, remember to tune in to our live stream from the press centre for instant reactions to each rehearsal.

Ryan Cobb

My first memory of watching the Eurovision Song Contest was back in 2001 and, over the years, my passion and enthusiasm for the contest has very much turned into an obsession. I adore music and I love geography, so this contest is a natural fit for me. If la la loving Eurovision was a crime, I'd certainly be a criminal!
