Day 4: Valentina Monetta & Jimmie Wilson complete first rehearsal for San Marino – REVIEW

ESCXTRA are live from Kyiv for day four of rehearsals ahead of the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest! The countries rehearsing today, in chronological order, are San Marino, Croatia, Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Estonia and Israel. Furthermore, read our handy guide for a more detailed look at this contest’s rehearsal schedule.

In addition, for our immediate reactions to every single rehearsal, you can follow our live stream from the press centre at the International Exhibition Center by visiting our YouTube channel.

The first artist to rehearse today is Valentina Monetta & Jimmie Wilson from San Marino. We have just watched their first run through of Spirit Of The Night live on screen and here is our initial reaction.

Summary in a sentence

While the song isn’t the most modern here, Valentina & Jimmie sell it absolutely perfectly. Maybe it can’t be completely ruled out of qualification… (Brent says it will definitely qualify)

Staging

San Marino’s LED backdtop is full of disco-themed neon lights although the stage doesn’t look dated like Serhat’s did last year. Valentina & Jimmie had three on-stage backing vocalists. The chandelier is visible above the performers, continuing the disco themes. The chemistry between the two is good.

Vocals

Valentina & Jimmie were vocally strong and harmonise well together and with the backing vocalists.

Costumes

Valentina is wearing a black printed t-shirt and black leggings, She has also brought along her handbag for that everyday clubbing look. Jimmie is also all in black, with his jacket, vest and trousers. He takes off his jacket towards the end of the performance to Valentina’s audible delight.

Watch the rehearsal!

Stay tuned for our reaction to Jacques Houdek as he rehearses My Friend next for Croatia. Meanwhile, remember to tune in to our live stream from the press centre for instant reactions to each rehearsal.

Ryan Cobb

My first memory of watching the Eurovision Song Contest was back in 2001 and, over the years, my passion and enthusiasm for the contest has very much turned into an obsession. I adore music and I love geography, so this contest is a natural fit for me. If la la loving Eurovision was a crime, I'd certainly be a criminal!
