After months of national finals, artist and song announcements, rehearsals, and much more, the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 came to an end tonight! After an exciting 3-hour grand final, Portugal has won this year’s contest!
Salvador Sobral’s song, Amar Pelos Dois, won the contest with 785 points, beating Bulgaria in second place with 615 points, and Moldova in third palce with 374 points.
In the days leading up to the contest, three big favourites for the win emerged: Bulgaria, Italy, and Portugal. Portugal finally managed to beat Italy and Bulgaria to the win but this was not without some resistance! Salvador received 382 points from the juries, and 407 points from the televoting, making them this year’s winner!
The big fan favourite for several months, Italy, came only 6th overall. This will likely be regarded as the biggest shock of the year, as most fans said that Italy would be an easy top 3.
Croatia surprised many fans by coming 9th in the televote, despite coming 22nd with the juries.
Australia received only 2 points in the televote, which was a massive shock to many fans, particular after being in 4th place with the juries, with 171 points.
The last place was taken by Spain, who received only 5 points from the televote, and none from the juries.
Germany received 3 points from the televote, and so narrowly missed out on being last place, with a total of 6 points.
I believed in Salvador since I first heard the song and it was only the second song in the history that made me emotional. The win was long overdue, but I’m glad it’s with this song which is truly timeless. Fantastic job Salvador and Luisa. See you in Lisboa!
Congratulations Portugal, it was about time that you won! Think after the performances tonight it would be a clear winner. Was hoping for it to be Bulgaria but it didn’t come close. Guess the Italian hype was over. And well done Moldova!
OH MY GOD MY HEART. Salvador is literally the most adorable person ever, and that reprise with his sister just absolutely melted my heart. I’m so happy that something that isn’t typical Eurovision has won, and as Salvador said, music is more about feelings, rather than fireworks!
What a way to return to the competition! A delicately presented song by a very capable performer. This did just enough to convince me of its title-winning credentials despite the fact I didn’t like the song before the contest.
I’m almost speechless. Salvador and Luisa (don’t forget her) have managed to build something no one thought could be possible. When they won the football Euro in 2016, jokes were flying of ‘Eurovision next!’ – Guess what. It is Eurovision next. I am so utterly delighted for the entire country of Portugal. They have brought us the most brilliant music in years. I’m delighted for my own country, The Netherlands too, showing we really seem to have grasped this concept. 11th out of 42 is something to be really proud of! Bulgaria and Moldova deserve all the compliments in the world too.
No country in tonight’s top 3 has ever been there before. That’s worth a massive bow to Europe. Well done, what a year
Wow, I am going to be honest, I didn’t see this coming and I am not a fan of the song at all but I am very pleased for Portugal. They deserved a win. I am very happy that Moldova did so well. Not so surprised Italy didn’t do as well as expected and honestly I am glad, I don’t think Italians would have appreciated a win. A few surprises:
– Australia getting so few points in the televote
– Croatia doing so well in the televote
– Austria getting 0 points in the televote
– Spain not getting nul points.
Really looking forward to Portugal 2018 already!
The Euroverse has imploded and I am delighted for Portugal and for ‘non-Eurovision’ music to have this success. Very happy for Bulgaria and Moldova too.
My reaction to the result: I’m crying!
Well, at least Portugal is close to Spain, so will be convenient for me to be there next year… but still I’m sad.
