Eurovision Canada: Contract negotiations stall

Meanwhile, is their still hope for the American Song Contest?

Earlier today Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest, Martin Österdahl attended the EBU and BBC Media press conference at the M&S Bank Arena, alongside the Managing Director for Liverpool 2023, Martin Green. During the Q&A session, Martin Österdahl was asked for the latest update on the inaugural Eurovision Canada.

Eurovision Canada in jeopardy?

Back in April 2022, the EBU revealed that following the interest shown in expanding the Eurovision Song Contest format with the American Song Contest, their northern neighbours, Canada would also host their own version. This was due to be a collaborative project between the ASC producers and Eurovision organisers. Overall, all ten provinces of Canada were expected to send representatives.

However, in today’s EBU and BBC Media conference, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest, Martin Österdahl, seemed to have some reservations about the future of Eurovision Canada. Of course, Eurovision Asia also struggled with the similar logistical challenges involved in trying to organise such a large scale music competition.

We’re still hoping. There’s still some avenues that are being looked into. But the original avenue that we pursued on that has sort of come to a bit of a halt, unfortunately.

American Song Contest to return?

In more positive news, Martin hinted at trying to get the American Song Contest to rise like a phoenix following its cancellation by NBC. So, there is a small chance we may yet see the show on another network in the future.

We have partners in the US who are looking into other partnerships to bring that back.
