Aalborg’s biggest indoor arena Gigantium has been caught in a big fire on Wednesday. The arena was also the city of Aalborg’s proposed arena for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest and has hosted the finals of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix four times – in 2006, 2010, 2012 and 2015.
The cause of fire was the use of weed burner by one of the workers in the arena. No one has died or been hurt in the fire, but the collateral damage is big, including the collapsing roof and several parts of the arena completely destroyed. The worker is expected to be fined for causing damage to the venue.
Gigantium is also an arena to the local handball club Aalborg Handball, which is right now the reigning champions in the national handball league.
The arena was apparently also a favourite to host the 2018 Danish final.
Where do you think the 2018 final will take place instead? Do you think the arena will be completely restored? Post your comments below and follow us on social media on @ESCXTRA.
