The first ever Eurovision Choir of the Year has already been reported as a unique show with many highlights. Now some of the ten countries that had broadcast the contest have released viewing figures and it seems it has been a ratings success.
In Denmark, the competition was the third most watched television show of the week on their cultural channel ‘DR K’. In Belgium, broadcaster RTBF’s cultural channel ‘La Trois’ achieved triple the average audience share for the channel on a Saturday night.
The viewing figures known so far are as follows:
Austria (ORF) – 140,000
Belgium (RTBF) – 63,500
Denmark (DR) – 81,000
Slovenia (RTVLO) – 246,600
Wales (S4C) – 52,000
The contest was also available to watch worldwide via an online live stream.
The Latvian capital, Riga hosted the contest and saw nine choirs competing from across Europe. The three-person jury chose Carmen Manet from Slovenia as the winner, the chamber choir made up of members of the Gimnazija Kranj Girls Choir. The girls sang Ta Na Solbici, Adrca and Aj, Zelena Je Vsa Gora during their performance. Welsh choir Côr Merched Sir Gâr achieved second place and hosts Latvia’s choir Spīgo were third.
The next Eurovision Choir of the Year will take place in 2019. It is unknown at this time who will be hosting the contest.
