Nicki French is back on the promotional circuit following the release of her brand new single Teardrops (On The Disco Floor) just a couple of weeks ago. In a fascinating interview with MonstaGigz.com, Nicki has spoken about her 2000 Eurovision experience. Furthermore, we find out if she’d ever like to fly the British flag again!
“It felt very much like the Olympics”
17 years ago, Nicki represented the United Kingdom in the 2000 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm. Her performance of Don’t Play That Song Again earned the UK a respectable 16th place finish and the hearts of many Eurovision fans. Indeed, Nicki has stayed an important figure with the Eurovision community with her co-hosting of the annual London Eurovision Party, an event she’s “proud” to be a part of. Nicki’s memories of her experience in 2000 are only positive:
“I’d love to do it again. My happiest memory of representing the UK in 2000 was probably winning A Song For Europe. There was just so much support from the fans, it was an amazing experience and I was very proud. I’m not the best sportsperson in the world and so to be able to represent my country in a singing competition meant it felt very much like the Olympics. There’s no pre-recorded vocals, so it’s all live.”
Would Nicki want to follow in Katrina’s Melodifestivalen footsteps?
Nicki was then asked about if she would ever consider going to Eurovision again. Perhaps she would want to follow in Katrina Leskanich’s footsteps and try out for Sweden’s Melodifestivalen? Indeed, Katrina participated in Melodifestivalen 2005, reaching the second chance round.
“I don’t honestly know. It’s such a Swedish event with some of their biggest stars returning year after year that it would seem to be unlikely that it would be something I’d ever win.”
“I think I’d want it to be me!”
The interview then turns to the subject of the UK in Eurovision. MonstaGigz.com reveals that Nicki would prefer some more established acts to compete in future editions of You Decide. Nevertheless, she was particularly positive on the selection of Lucie Jones this year. So what was her answer when asked about her dream British representative in Lisbon?
“I don’t know … I think I’d want it to be me!”
