Work has started in Belgium on choosing an artist to represent them in Lisbon for the Eurovision Song Contest. It is Flemish broadcaster VRT’s turn to determine the entry.
A spokesperson for VRT has confirmed to Songfestival.be that they have formed a selection committee with internal and external music specialists to search for a suitable candidate. They have been in discussion with both known and unknown artists but have yet to come to a decision. VRT have said when they have chosen their artist, they will announce it, but couldn’t comment on when that might be.
Belgium rotates selection each year between their two national broadcasters VRT (Flemish) and RTBF. (French-speaking) While RTBF usually internally selects, VRT usually use a televised ‘Eurosong’ national selection format to select their entry. There is no comment yet however on whether this will be the case in 2018 once they have chosen their artist. VRT previously internally selected Iris in 2012, with the public deciding the song for her to sing in Baku.
Another top 10 finish for Belgium?
Belgium in recent contests have been very successful, with three top 10 finishes in the last three years. Loic Nottet finished 4th in Austria, Laura Tesoro finished 10th in Stockholm and Blanche finished 4th in Kyiv. Belgium has won the Eurovision Song Contest once; in 1986, and best result since was in 2002 reaching 2nd.
