🇩🇰 Denmark to select Eurovision 2022 entry on March 5

Submissions for Dansk Melodi Grand Prix are now open and will close in October

Last month, DR, the Danish public broadcaster, confirmed their Eurovision 2022 participation. This will mark Denmark’s 50th Eurovision participation to date. Dansk Melodi Grand Prix will once again be used to select their entry, with the final taking place on March 5.

Following the confirmation of their participation, DR have confirmed that they will select their Eurovision 2022 entry via Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. The one-night selection will be held on March 5, with a total of 8 songs competing.

The window for song submissions opens from today until October 29. The rules for submissions are as follows:

  • Either a composer, lyricist or performing artist must be a Danish citizen or have a similar connection to Denmark e.g. residence in Denmark or married to a Dane.
  • Those living in the Faroe Islands and Greenland are also eligible to compete.
  • All songs must be original and have not been played at public venues or be available online.
  • Composers and lyricists can submit multiple entries.
  • Lyrics must not contain political messages, swear words or other unacceptable language.
  • All songs that meet the competition criteria will be evaluated by a professional jury set up by DR. The final decision of the jury cannot be appealed.
  • Until DR reveal the song titles and writers of the chosen entries, those involved are not allowed to reveal any details of their entries.
  • All vocals must be performed live during the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix final.

Meanwhile, DR recently confirmed that Denmark will not be returning to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest this year, due to be held in Paris in December.

Denmark at Eurovision 2021

Back in April last year, DR wasted no time in confirming that they would be hosting Dansk Melodi Grand Prix in 2021, and thus would not be internally-selecting Ben & Tan following the cancellation of Eurovision 2020. Although the duo submitted an entry for the selection, the broadcaster ended up declining it.

In March, DR hosted DMGP as a one-night selection featuring eight competing acts. Following two rounds, Fyr & Flamme’s “Øve os på hinanden” triumphed in the televote-only super final. The song was DR’s first entry to be entirely in Danish since 1997. The entry had immense public support prior to Eurovision, becoming the first Danish Eurovision entry to top the singles chart since 2013.

Unfortunately, this didn’t quite convert to success in Rotterdam. After closing the second semi-final, “Øve os på hinanden” placed 11th with 89 points. This was Denmark’s first non-qualification since 2016.
