The Italian broadcaster RAI confirmed that Italy will take part to Eurovision in Portugal next May. The announcement came with a tweet on Eurovision Rai.
Italy in the Eurovision
In Lisbon, it will be Italy’s eighth participation in a row since returning in 2011 and the 44th appearance at the contest. Italy was one of the seven countries that competed in the very first contest in 1956. It won the contest in two occasions, in 1964 and 1990.
The country regularly participated at Eurovision until 1997 when it withdrew for 14 years. Italy returned to the contest in 2011, represented by Raphael Gualazzi with “Madness of love” earning 2nd place.
Since returning, Italy ranked in the top 10 in five out of seven occasions, including two top 3 finishes in 2011 and 2015. In Kyiv, Francesco Gabbani represented Italy with his charismatic entry “Occidentali’s Karma.” Despite being a top favorite to win the contest, it only placed sixth.
Sanremo Festival
Italy will choose Francesco Gabbani’s successor through the Sanremo Festival. As we previously reported, RAI has introduced some changes to the show, with record labels now able to suggest participants. Sanremo will take place between the 6th and 10th of February next year presented by Claudio Baglioni.
Are you glad Italy will be represented at the contest once again? Who do you want to see follow Francesco Gabbani’s footsteps? What is your favorite Italian entry?
