The Scoop

UK star Paloma Faith on a potential Eurovision offer: “I would do it!”

A few years ago, British star Paloma Faith found herself in the Eurovision rumour mill. Nevertheless, she was swift to distance herself from the world’s biggest music competition. However, last weekend during a Facebook Live session with her fans, Paloma has revealed she has had a change of heart. “I would do it!” she reveals.

“I’m a major control freak!”

Earlier this month, Paloma released the lead single, Crybaby, from her upcoming fourth studio album The Architect. As part of the promotional campaign for her single, the BRIT Award-winning star hosted a Facebook Live chat with her fans to ask her any questions they wished. It seems Paloma fans and Eurovision fans have a crossover, as Eurovision was the topic of questioning eleven minutes into the chat!

“Would you do Eurovision if you were asked to?” a fan asks Paloma. She responds enthusiastically:

Yes, I guess it’s quite a broad question. If I was asked to do Eurovision and I loved the song that they wanted me to do and I could be completely in control of everything because I’m a major control freak then I would do it!

Previously rumoured in 2014

This may surprise some fans as Paloma was quick to distance herself from the competition when she found herself rumoured to take part for the UK in 2014. In the end, it was BBC Introducing artist Molly who was internally selected by the BBC. This was a different method compared to the selection of established artists including Blue and Bonnie Tyler in previous years.

Paloma instantly reacted with shock upon hearing the rumour back in February 2014. However, following a negative reaction from many fans, she clarified it was the idea of competition that scared her rather than any negativity towards artists who compete in the competition themselves.

The UK’s most relevant entry in decades?

Fast forwarding to now, there’s no doubt Paloma’s offer to do Eurovision will delight many fans. If she represented the United Kingdom, she would arguably be the most musically successful and relevant artist to represent the nation since the 1990s. So far, she has three multi-platinum studio albums to her name in the UK as well as success across mainland Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Her biggest hit to date, Only Love Can Hurt Like This, hit the top ten in the UK and New Zealand and #1 in Australia!

However, it is probably unlikely Paloma would take her chances in Eurovision: You Decide. Therefore, the BBC would have to change up their selection process and internally select Paloma for Lisbon. Nevertheless, we’re sure many fans would support such a decision.

Would you like to see Paloma Faith represent the United Kingdom next year? If so, how do you think the BBC should go about making it happen? Let us know in the comments below!

My first memory of watching the Eurovision Song Contest was back in 2001 and, over the years, my passion and enthusiasm for the contest has very much turned into an obsession. I adore music and I love geography, so this contest is a natural fit for me. If la la loving Eurovision was a crime, I'd certainly be a criminal!
