ESCXTRA’s 2018 Hopefuls: Czech Republic

Welcome to our brand new weekly series, ‘ESCXTRA’s 2018 Hopefuls’, in which we will tell you who we would like to see in Eurovision next year! This series will keep you entertained with new music from across Europe every Monday until the national final season begins next year, and may give you somebody new to root for to represent your country!  Today, we look at who we want to see represent the Czech Republic in Eurovision 2018. Let’s get started!

Lenka Filipová, better known as Lenny, began playing the piano at only four years old, and has had a completely musical upbringing. At 16 years old, Lenny joined a band and toured around Europe, Australia, America, and Canada! At the same time, Lenny competed in numerous song writing competitions.

In 2013, Lenny signed a contract with Universal Music, and in June 2013 she released her first EP, All My Love. Last year, she released her debut album, Hearts. The album topped the charts in the Czech Republic for two weeks, and won the Album of the Year award at the national Anděl awards! Lenny is clearly well loved in her home country, and it’s easy to see why. For her to represent the Czech Republic in Eurovision would be a great decision!

Thom Artway

Tomáš Maček, a.k.a. Thom Artway, appeared on the Czech music scene in 2013 when his song Towards The Sun was featured in a Czech Christmas film called Wings of Christmas. He became widely known in the Czech Republic two years later, after his first single I Have No Inspiration won him a nomination for Discovery of the Year at the Český slavík Mattoni awards!

Thom and his band are currently on tour around the Czech Republic. Prior to this, he has done lots of travelling around the world, mostly for reasons unrelated to his music. He even travelled to Ireland in 2013 simply to work on a farm! Thom’s music has a distinctive charm to it and is incredibly radio friendly. This would definitely be something different for the Czech Republic in Eurovision, and could give them the good result that they’ve struggled to achieve for so long!

Lucie Vondráčková

Lucie Vondráčková (pronounced ‘vawn-druh-cz-kaw-va’) is not only a popular singer in the Czech Republic, but also a highly respected theatre and film actress. Like Lenny, she has also had a musical upbringing, and has won many awards for her music!

Lucie is still active today, but seems to have been rather quiet recently. Perhaps this could be the perfect time for Lucie to make a big comeback, and Eurovision could give her a fantastic start! She really knows how to perform, so we’d be sure to see an amazing performance from her for the Czech Republic!

Next week, we will look at who we want to see represent Latvia!
What do you think of our hopefuls? Is there anybody else you’d like to see for the Czech Republic in Eurovision? Do the idea of any of these artists excite you? Tell us in the comments below!

Luke Malam

I've watched Eurovision for as long as I can remember, but my interest really built in 2008, after I decided to watch the semifinals online, out of boredom, before the final...I was blown away by the quality of the show and have been hooked ever since! I'm a competitive trampolinist and I love baking. I've also just completed a master's degree in Research Methods in Psychology at University College London.
