Rehearsal review

Stage presentation

If you thought the Benidorm Fest performance was good…just you wait. They’ve taken what was a Eurovision-ready package and turned it into a VMAs performance.

The changes from Benidorm Fest are a new intro (instrumental, dark lit with the shadows of the dancers circling Chanel). The other new addition is a diamond encrusted fan, which Chanel pops for the final chorus.

Spain are not using LEDs at all, and are instead joining Israel in using the pull-down lighting rig that acts as a background throughout. The lighting is absolutely spectacular, framing Chanel and her dancers perfectly.

Perhaps most thrillingly, is that Chanel is the only artist to use a pyro curtain for the staging so far, which takes it over the edge into ‘this could really win’ territory.

Costumes and styling

As we’ve seen from RTVE’s twitter, Chanel is wearing an intricate set of chaps with a jacket, hand-stitched with 50,000 crystals. The red and white colours are complemented by the hues of red in the lighting.

Her hair is in a side bun, with her hair pin removal being a moment for the second verse. Expect plenty of hair-ography.

Vocal quality

Chanel is joined by FIVE dancers, meaning Chanel is relying solely on pre-recorded backing vocals. However, rest assured that she sounded incredible in every run, and speaking of runs, she added some new vocalisations to the last chorus for extra effect. I’m seeing this scoring a strong jury vote as well based on pure athleticism.

Overall impression

Easily one of the most visually stunning and thrilling performances of the year, if not ever. There is something to watch every second, and you cannot look away. I cannot see how this misses the top 5.
