Whilst speaking to Metubat about his career and background, Emil Kadirov mentioned that he is in negotiation with Ictimai Television to participate in Lisbon next year. Will he indeed get the chance to represent Azerbaijan in Lisbon?
Who is Emil?
Emil Kadirov is well known to the public when he participated in The Voice Russia. Two coaches turned around for his audition but ended up choosing Alexander Gradsky to be his mentored.
Gradsky is also known as Dina Garipova‘s mentor when she participated in The Voice Russia back in 2012.
In his interview with Metubat, he said:
“I want to represent Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest.
At present, negotiations are underway with responsible persons in Azerbaijan.
I hope the talks will be successful and I will be able to represent Azerbaijan at the Eurovision-2018, which will be held in Portugal. “
Continuing on with Internal Selection
Azerbaijan has chosen their entry through an internal selection since 2015.
The internal selection has brought mixed fortunes to Azerbaijan. It has not replicated the top ten results it achieved in the early years of participation, though. From 2008 to 2013, Azerbaijan always scored top ten results. However, the success declined afterwards. The Azeris still always qualify for the final, but their best result after 2013 is this year’s fourteenth place, which DiHaj achieved with Skeletons.
Azerbaijan at the Eurovision Song Contest
Azerbaijan has been a recent addition to the contest, debuting back in 2008 in Belgrade with Elnur & Samir with their song Day After Day.
The nation has won once, back in 2011 with Ell & Nikki with their song Running Scared. This gave Azerbaijan the right to host the 2012 contest, which they did in Baku Crystal Hall.
Not missing a Grand Final in its participation, Azerbaijan has established itself as one of the most successful countries int he contests. They share this record along with Romania, Russia, and Ukraine.
DiHaj represented Azerbaijan in 2017 with her song Skeletons. Together with a horse on a ladder, she finished in fourteenth.
Do you think that Emil is the right choice for Azerbaijan in next year’s competition?.
