What I love the most about Ukrainian entries is that they manage to stay true to their roots whilst also adhering to current trends in the musical industry. In “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors”, Alina’s voice has a very tranquillising and transportive character and the atmospheric nature of the instrumentalisation is hauntingly beautiful. In particular, I really love the use of the trembita at the start of the song, as the wooden alpine horn, common to mountain dwellers, is a great reflection of Ukrainian folk music and the country’s pastoral roots. Once again, Ukraine hasn’t failed to disappoint me and arguably has a fantastic chance of continuing their impressive streak at Eurovision in Turin with Alina.

This song is absolutely exceptional, the melody is hypnotic and continues to built and build into the most gorgeous crescendo. This was the first song of the season to fully stop me in my tracks and command my attention in the way that “Solovey” and “Shum” did previously. There’s a sense of drama to the song that always elevates native language folk songs in a Eurovision context. As a huge fan of Alina’s music, this did not disappoint me in the slightest. I understand people’s complaints about the rap verse in the middle, but I think it adds character and texture to the song. I believe that there is immense potential here for staging, and I think the contest needs a song with this message, especially in this year.
