Today there are a few Eurovision superstars who are celebrating their birthday. They represent Norway, France, Montenegro and Bulgaria. Their results vary from 8th place to third to last. One of them is (at least according to us!) the Queen herself. We give you Sofi Marinova!
Ingrid Bjørnov, 54
Ingrid represented Norway at the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest in Luxembourg. She did so as half of the duo Dollie de Luxe alongside Benedicte Adrian. They performed the song “Lenge leve livet”, finishing in 17th place out of 19. However, some people might remember them more because of their outfits, hairstyles and performance rather than the song itself…
Patricia Kaas, 51
French superstar and primadonna Patricia Kaas represented her country at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. She performed the wonderful French chanson “Et S’il Fallait Le Faire”, finishing in 8th place.
Knez represented Montenegro at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna. As only the second Montenegrin act in the history of the contest he qualified for the grand final. There, he received votes from seven countries, including one 12 and one 10. As a result of this, he finished in 13th place with Zeljko Joksimovic’ song “Adio”.
Sofi Marinova, 42
Her (our?) majesty, Queen Sofi Marinova of the Euroverse, represented Bulgaria at the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku. There she gave us a flawless performance of her masterpiece “Love Unlimited”. In the most unfair of all semi-finals in the history of the contest (we are, obviously, 100% unbiased here…duh!) Sofi did not qualify for the final. Bulgaria received the same number of votes as Norway, meaning they tied for 10th place and the last spot in the final. As the tiebreaker rule states; the country that gets points from more nations “wins”. Following this rule, our queen finished in 11th place, since she received points from 10 countries, whereas Norway received points from 11 countries. This happened on the 24th of May, which without a doubt ought to be a national day of mourning in the Euroverse.
All of us here at escXtra want to wish Ingrid, Patricia and Knez the happiest of birthday! This is, however, for us, as it should be for everyone, Queen Sofi Day!
