Eurovision and Grease lightning! Go, go, go, go, go, go…

In 1978, one of the worlds most popular movies ever, “Grease”, saw the light of day. In the classic musical movie, we met teenagers Danny and Sandy, played by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, and their friends. The story plays out during their final year in high school. Now every generation since then knows the songs and some lines from the movie. But what does Eurovision and Grease have in common?

Eurovision and Grease

Both Eurovision Song Contest and Grease the movie are all about the music. And have one big thing in common that is that Olivia Newton-John took part in both. That is that she reprecented UK in 1974 with the song “Long Live Love”. Where she won reached 4th place out of 17 countries.

More Eurovision and Grease!

Next year, in 2018, this classic turns 40, a fact that will be celebrated around the globe. And so also in Iceland. Sonus Events announced on their facebook page, that they will stage a concert version of “Grease” in Reykjavik’s Háskólabíó on March 15th. And the lineup is quite amazing! The four singers are all connected to Eurovision and Söngvakeppnin.

Jón Jósep Snæbjörnsson, or Jónsi, as we know him will sing for Danny. Jónsi performed for Iceland in 2004 and also as a part of a duet in 2012. This is not the first time he took part as Danny, because he played it 2003, where Birgitta Haukdal played the part of Sandy. This is their version of “Summer Nights”, that is “Sumarást” in Icelandic.

In this anniversary concert version, no other then Yohanna will follow Olivia’s “song steps” and represent Sandy. Her song “Is it True” in 2009 became the favorite of many from that year. Will be more then interesting to see her perform the Grease classic’s like “You’re the one that I want” and “Summer Nights“!

Söngvakeppnin and Grease

The two other singers, in the show next year are Jógvan Hansen and Stefanía Svavars. Both of them have participated in Söngvakeppinin, Jógvan took part four times that is in 2009, 2010 and 2013. The last time he took part, he sang a duet with Stefanía called “Til Þín” which made it to the Söngvakeppnin’s final. Stefanía also took part at Söngvakeppin in 2015.
