825 songs submitted for Benidorm Fest 2024

The selected artists will be announced on November 11

RTVE, the Spanish public broadcaster, has received a total of 825 songs for Benidorm Fest 2024. Although the number of submissions is down on previous years, the number of songs from record labels and publishers has increased considerably.

Benidorm by numbers

According to RTVE’s press release, Benidorm Fest 2024 has set a record for the number of submissions received through its web platform. Last year, 455 entries were submitted online. This year, all 825 proposals were submitted solely through the online portal. Furthermore, all entries received consist of both a complete artist and song matched together for the first time. Of the 825 entries, 23 were born from the international songwriting camp hosted by RTVE recently in September.

Further, among the submissions are a mix of new and already established artists, as well as the largest amount of genre diversity RTVE has ever received for Benidorm Fest.

From the 825, 16 will be shortlisted for the televised selection. Next month, the broadcaster will contact the selected artists, who will then be officially presented at the launch of Benidorm Fest 2024 in Seville on November 11.

Once again the shows will be hosted from the Palau Municipal d’Esports l’Illa de Benidorm. Eight songs will compete in the first Semi-Final to be held on January 30 and the other eight will compete in the Second Semi-Final on February 1. The top four from each Semi-Final will advance to the Grand Final on Saturday February 3.

Across all three shows, the voting will consist of a professional jury (50%), demoscopic jury (25%) and public televoting (25%). Among the professional jury includes industry music experts, as well as professionals from abroad.

Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest

Since their debut in 1961, with Conchita Bautista and ‘Estando contigo‘, the Iberian nation has participated in 62 consecutive contests. Only the United Kingdom has a longer unbroken streak. So far Spain has won the Eurovision Song Contest on two occasions. Firstly in 1968 with Massiel and ‘La la la‘ and the following year in the dramatic four-way tie, with Salomé and ‘Vivo cantando‘.

Earlier this year Blanca Paloma won the second edition of Benidorm Fest with the anthemic ballad, ‘Eaea’. During the Grand Final of the Liverpool contest, Blanca achieved 17th place with 100 points. Thus, giving Spain the unique stat of having placed in every position from 1st-26th at least once.
