Poland 2020

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland will not debut at Junior Eurovision in 2020

BBC Alba will not be travelling to Poland this November

Scottish broadcaster BBC Alba have confirmed that they have ruled out a debut at this year’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest. The contest is set to take place in Poland in November.

The broadcaster originally stated last June that talks had taken place to enable participation this year. However, the broadcaster has now announced that they will not debut at the 2020 contest. So far, only eight countries have confirmed their intentions to participate.

“No plans” to follow in Wales’ footsteps

Yesterday, BBC Alba’s press department confirmed to Eurofestivales that they will not debut at the contest in Poland this November. Speaking to the blog, they stated that:

We have no plans to participate in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020.

If Scotland were to debut at the contest, they would be following in the footsteps of Wales, who debuted at the 2018 contest, to become the second UK constituent nation to take part. The United Kingdom last took part in the contest in 2005.

Scotland in the Eurovision Family of Events

BBC Alba – the Scottish broadcaster – first took part in a Eurovision event in 2019, when they made their debut in Eurovision Choir. Scotland were represented by the choir, Alba, at the event under the conductorship of Joy Dunlop. Alba failed to make the top 3, and therefore their placement was not announced.

Following their participation at Eurovision Choir in Gothenburg, BBC Alba confirmed that they had not closed the doors on a debut at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest as they “will be learning from” their participation at the choir event. They used their participation in Sweden to “inform future involvements around” the Eurovision family of events.
