A few EU broadcasters have released an open letter to the Danish government about proposed budget cuts to the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR). What this means is that the Danish government is trying to decrease the broadcaster’s budget by 25%
Threats to DR will have significant and far-reaching consequences
The open letter from EU has mentioned the importance and benefits of having a public broadcaster. They have mentioned the following:
“Public service broadcasters publish more news content than comparable commercial media; they increase citizens’ knowledge of politics, and have a positive impact on political participation.”
Negotiations still ongoing
In the open letter, it was mentioned that the negotiations are still being undertaken by the government. The proposal being suggested to decrease DR’s budget is to abolish the license fee. This would mean that DR would get their funding through a tax.
The open letter states that it is thought to be believed that the budget cut is trying to initially limit the budget cuts to 12.5%. However, the chances of the budget cuts being more severe cannot be dismissed.
What do you think of the proposed budget cuts for DR?. Do you think this will have an impact on them participating in Eurovision?. If they are victorious once again, do you think this will affect the chance of them hosting the contest?.
