An Xtra Happy Birthday; February 13th

From yesterday’s single birthday, today a total of six former Eurovision contestants celebrate their birthday. The oldest was born in the late 1930s, the youngest in the mid 80s. We also have both a birthday boy and a birthday girl who celebrate their 40th birthday today, and no; they are not twins! We have ha lot of good results represented among today’s boys and girls, and one is even a winner; Niamh Kavanagh!

Carmela Corren, 80

Carmela represented Austria at the 1963 Eurovision Song Contest in London. She performed the song “Vielleicht geschieht ein Wunder”, finishing in seventh place out of 16 participants.

Niamh Kavanagh, 50

Niamh Kavanaghrepresented Ireland at both the 1993 and 2010 Eurovision Song Contest. On the first occasion she did so on homeground in Millstreet, where she secured her country it’s second consecutive win with “In Your Eyes”. She returned to the contest in 2010 in Oslo. There she performed the song “It’s For You“, finishing 9th in the second semi-final, thus qualirying for the grand final. On the Saturday night, whoever, she only finished in 23rd place out of 25 participating countries.

Karoline Krüger, 48

Karoline represented Norway at the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin. She did so with the amazingly beautiful ballad “For vår jord”. Not only did she sing the song, she also played the piano on stage. This is one of the most popular Norwegian Eurovision entries ever, both among Norwegians and among foreign fans of the contest. On the big night in Dublin Karoline and “For vår jord” finished in fifth place.

Edsilia Rombley, 40

Edsilia represented the Netherlands at both the 1998 and 2007 Eurovision Song Contests. On the first occasion, in Birminghamm she performed the song “Hemel en aarde”, finishing in a very solid fourth place. She returned to the contest nine years later, this time with the song “On Top of the World“, which did not do quite as well. In Helsinki, she finished 21st out of the 28 participants in the semi-final, thus failing to qualify for the grand final.

Viktor Diawara, 40

Victor Diawara represented Lithuania at both the 2001 and 2006 Eurovision Song Contests. On the first occasion he participated as part of the group Skamp. They performed the song “You Got Style“, finishing in 13th place. Five years later he returned to the contest, this time as part of LT United. They finished 5th in the semi-final, thus qualifying for the grand final. There they finished in a very solid 6th place, with their song “We are the Winners”.

Adrian Gaxha, 34

Adrian represented Macedonia at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade. He did so as part of the trio Tamara, Vrčak and Adrijan. They performed the song “Let Me Love You” in the second semi-final. In their semi-final, they finished tenth, which means they should really have made it to the final. This was however one of the years when a jury of music professionals selected the 10th qualifier, and they decided that Sweden’s Charlotte Perelli should go to the final instead of Tamara, Vrčak Adrijan.

All of us here at escXtra wish to send our best wishes to all of today’s Eurovision birthday stars!
