Lisbon 2018

Xtra Interviews with Jessica, Dotter, Martin and Barbi #Melfest

After the first dress rehearsal of the third semi-final of Melodifestivalen 2018, we had the chance to speak to some of the competing artists of this weeks semi-final. All agree, that it’s going to be a close race and that all the entries have a high quality and are so different to each other. Read/Watch, what went down below:

Martin Almgren: “I’m happy to go first, so I don’t get nervous while watching all the good songs from backstage”

Martin already won “Swedish Idol”, but he thinks, that Melfest is much bigger than his previous competition show. He said, that his experience with talent shows helps him with the camera and the audience, but he always gets nervous. About the running order, he prefers to perform first so he won’t get nervous backstage watching all the other songs. During the performance, he focuses full on the camera and his work and can’t watch the reactions of the people. He saw some people after his rehearsal, who looked happy, so he thinks they liked it. In his opinion, it is going to be a strong semi and a close race.

Barbi Escobar: “Performing my song “Stark” for the first time in front of an audience was the best experience of my life”

Barbi’s entry is called “Stark” (Strong). She is excited to be at Melfest and is confident with her performance. The message about her abstract performance is to find the energy and to be strong. She doesn’t care about starting as No. 2. She fully believes in her entry. The first time performing her song in front of an audience was the best experience of her life and at the same time nervewracking. She already has planned new music for the future. She is not certain about the type of music she will release, but you will hear more of her in the future.

Jessica Andersson: “It’s a happy party song, so I just go out there and have fun”

It feels great for her to be back in Melfest. She is a bit nervous, but will mainly have fun as her song is a great party song. The thing about coming back is, that she just loves Melfest since she was a kid. “Party Voice” is her favorite song of her entries, as this is a new type of a song for her. As she has never been to Lisbon before, she would love to go for Sweden. She also planned on releasing an EP in style of her Melfest entry “Party Voice”. She isn’t sure about the time she will release it, but it is coming.

Dotter: “Competing as an artist feels less like competing as a songwriter”

Last year Dotter wrote Mariette’s “A Million Years”. This year she participates as an artist. She says, that she likes being in the spotlight, so performing herself is her thing. Competing as a songwriter felt for her more being in a competition. Competing herself just feels like doing her thing and less like a competition. Her stage performance features just a few lights and many abstract camera angles. Her creative director came up with the idea and worked it out together with Dotter. Melfest is for her a great push as an artist. Going to Lisbon would be everything for her and she loved, that she got so many great reactions for her entry so far.

Dominik Rössing

Hey, I'm Dominik from Germany. Watched my first Eurovision in 2003 and I was in love right away! Attended my first contest in 2011 and every contest since 2013. The same happened with Melodifestivalen. Started watching in 2006 and been to every final since 2017 and try to make it to at least one heat each year, too. After all, Melodifestivalen is the real deal ♥
